Pilot was the name given to the first generation of personal digital assistants manufactured by Palm Computing in 1996 (then a division of U.S. Robotics and later 3Com).
Palm handhelds are beginning to become more and more advanced, including the ability to become hard drives on computers via USB cables, and are beginning to merge with smartphones.
Pilot Pen Corporation, but "Palm Pilot" has entered the vernacular as a synonym for PDA, sometimes regardless of whether a device is manufactured by Palm or runs the Palm OS.

We were among the many who voiced disappointment with the Palm m505, and while the m515's color screen still isn't at the top of the class, it's an obvious and welcome improvement.
Palm Desktop is more than adequate, but if you are in a corporate environment and Outlook is your scheduling/e-mailing/tasking brain center (which it is for us), the synchronization is seamless.
Palm is only interested in having you buy, but they are definitely not interested in keeping you as a customer.

After numerous questions regarding my PDA (which was a Palm 3x then a Visor Deluxe and now a TRG Pro) and all the many hacks, freeware, shareware, medical databases and reference material that I have accumulated from surfing the web and watching the various newsgroups.
All files that end in one of the previous set of 3 letters are Palm Pilot OS® files that will only work when you HotSync them into your HandHeld Alot of times I download these files from the web, HotSync them to my Pilot, attempt to find them on my Pilot but have no luck.
Basically its almost analogous to reading a medical chart with lot of consult services, you may choose to add to the discussion by posting a message or you may choose to just watch the conversation go back and forth about a topic of your interest and be a sponge.

Here, ms-dns is used to pass the IP number of a DNS server to the pilot, and proxyarp is used to get the PPP host to advertise connectivity to the pilot.
When you supply a phone number of "00", the palm knows to skip contacting the modem, and connects directly to the serial port.

This scenario points out how important it is to "sync" your Palm as often as possible--I didn't get into the daily syncing habit until after I dropped my Palm and realized that I hadn't sync'ed in a week.
The Palm III boasts some structural improvements over the PalmPilot Pro (the memory/battery "doors" are screwed in to prevent accidental dislodging, and the HotSync contact protector is a great idea) yet manages to look extremely sleek.

The Palm V has far exceeded my needs and is perfect for the everyday user looking for a palm organizer that is just that, an organizer and 24hr assistant.
The touch -screen alignment of the first Palm V I received went out of whack almost immediately making it impossible to "tap" anything in the top half inch of the screen and extremely irritating.
The return policy was easy and I was impressed by the "just put it back in the box it came in, have the courier service pick it up and we'll sort it all out" and hopefull of a successful result.
