Wellwood Murray, of nearby Banning, opened Palm Springs' first hotel, called the Palm Springs Hotel, which was conveniently located directly across the road from the Indian bathhouse where his guests could take advantage of its warm, curative waters.
In 1938, Palm Springs opened the first high school in the Palm Springs Union High School District, which, in in 1948, was combined with the Desert School District to form the Palm Springs Unified School District.
Palm Springs was now on its way to becoming a thriving resort.

Palm Springs has an ideal, tourist-friendly location on the edge of the great deserts of Southern California, flanked by high forested mountains that provide an escape from the prevailing heat that persists for most of the year, and yet only two hours drive from the expanding metropolis of Los Angeles.
Mountains: North of Palm Springs marks the start of the Mojave Desert - a vast sandy plain with only occasional habitation, although the immediate north east is more hilly, and here the Little San Bernardino Mountains rise to 5,000 feet and are covered with the many curious plants of the Joshua Tree National Park.
Thermal: Southeast of Palm Springs, the super-expensive suburbia continues 20 miles to La Quinta and Indio, then is abruptly replaced by rather uninspiring farmland and small, dusty settlements with a distinct Mexican feel.

I wish that I had more photographs of the beautiful golf courses in Palm Springs but the sport is so exciting that I can't hold the camera still long enough to capture it.
Palm Desert is just east of Palm Springs, but it is more or less the same idea.
