PalmOne Monday said its profit that was more than twice Wall Street estimates on strong sales of pocket-sized digital organizers, and set aggressive growth forecasts, based on greater sales of its Treo "smartphones" which combine a mobile phone with scheduling and personal data features.
They were perhaps most encouraged by palmOne's forecast for the fiscal year 2005, which ends in May. The company called for a full year profit of $1.15 a share to $1.25 a share, on revenue of $1.21 billion to $1.29 billion, and stronger profit margins, all higher than Wall Street estimates.

PalmOne (PLMO:Nasdaq - commentary - research) said it's laying off 12% of its workforce in an effort to get back in the fl in its fiscal year 2005, which begins in June.
They knocked as much as 20% off the value of the shares in intraday trading in December, when palmOne reported earnings for the first time and issued guidance that was much weaker than expected.
In Wednesday trading, which saw broad-based tech selling, palmOne stock was down $1.21, or 10.1%, to $10.85 as of 11:15 a.m.

PalmONE (Quote, Chart) CEO Todd Bradley is stepping down from the position effective at the end of February, the handheld computing company announced Monday.
Bradley was the first CEO of PalmONE, which the company created in October of 2003 after Palm split its business into hardware and software companies and acquired then competitor Handspring.
Prior to joining palmOne, Bradley's interim replacement, Ed Colligan was the president and CEO of Handspring Inc. Upon the acquisition by palmONE Colligan became vp and gm of the Wireless Business Unit.
