Wired News: How PalmPilot Became a Hacker Cult
The Mac-loyal PalmPilot developers were soon paralleled, Purmal said, by a Windows development camp that was scrambling to hack together its own tools for Windows-based PalmPilot development.
The Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science cites the PalmPilot as the most recent example of strong "customer advocacy behavior" and "fanatic supporters." PalmPilot owners, the journal said, are happy to submit their names and preferences to 3Com, put themselves on mailing lists for additional products, and return frequently to the company's Web page.
There is even a project under way by members of the Linux operating system community to port a version of the Unix-based OS for the PalmPilot, though the team admit it's far from ready for prime time.

O'Reilly: PalmPilot Top Ten Tips and Tricks
By the way, 3Com recommends alkaline batteries for the PalmPilot - not just because of their long life, but also because they are depleted at a smooth rate.
The PalmPilot would be somewhat larger than 3 x 5 inches if it had to show you the actual names of your appointments in its month-at-a-glance view.
The PalmPilot's built-in speaker doesn't have the strength to wake up an entire dorm room, but it's loud enough to get your attention if you're (a) at your desk at work, hoping not to disturb your co-workers or (b) sleeping with the PalmPilot on the bedside table.

PalmPilot: the ultimate demo (EasyPrint)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
But the PalmPilot is a technology virus: it spreads by face-to-face demo, from one enthusiastic owner to the next.
Most PalmPilot demos are casual, informal, unscheduled, one-on-one affairs, the kind that goes on in thousands of grass-roots, face-to-face encounters every day.
Put your PalmPilot in its HotSync cradle to hold it steady; set up a tripod with a camcorder zoomed way in; and route the camcorder's signal to a big-screen TV or projection system.

Amazon.com: Books: PalmPilot Resource Kit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
As with the PalmPilot itself, the kit's CD-ROM is Windows and Mac compatible; however, a PDF reader (available for free download on the Web) is required to view the files.
If you're not a pick-it-up-and-start-using-it PalmPilot owner, who only consults the user manual or a reference book when you're stumped, then this book and CD combo might be a real comfort in helping you learn your way around.
The PalmPilot Resource Kit is positioned as a quick reference for owners of the PalmPilot and Palm III organizers.

O'Reilly: News -- My Love Affair with the PalmPilot
The key insight of the PalmPilot developers, which seems to have been lost on other hand-held developers, is that a PDA is not a replacement for a PC, but a supplement to it--a peripheral, if you will.
Simply slip the PalmPilot into a cradle connected to the PC serial port (or with the Palm III, use the infrared port and skip the cradle entirely), press one button, and "hotsync" your data in seconds.
Anything entered onto the PalmPilot is transferred to the PC; anything entered into the PalmPilot desktop is transferred to the PalmPilot--names, addresses and phone numbers, appointments, memos, new applications to be installed or removed--you name it.

The musical PalmPilot computer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The PalmPilot's ability to be harnessed to almost any mobile task is a tribute not to its design simplicity, but its design openness (and 3Com/Palm's willingness to support almost any add-on effort).
As of the Palm III, the PalmPilot has a much stronger and more flexible music architecture, including a louder speaker and the ability to play standard MIDI files.
The PalmPilot can play back standard (one-track, format 0) MIDI files, which are like text files for music.

Alex Lane's Corner of Texas - PalmPilot Page
The PalmPilot is a small, hand-held computer that provides scheduling, address-book, to-do, and note-taking capability, and which has the ability to run third-party applications, including graphics programs, games, and document and Web browsers.
The PalmPilot is easily connected to one's personal computer (I can vouch for PCs), and all of the information on it can be backed up in roughly the time it takes to format a 1.44-MB floppy disk.
Learning how to input characters with a stylus is a lot easier than it first seems; instead of having the PalmPilot learn to read your handwriting, you adjust your writing in such a way as to make it easy for the PalmPilot to identify the characters you input.

I work at a dive tank, so mine is mainly for "splash protection" (okey okey, it's really insurance against me slipping and falling on my big dumb butt into the tank...).
It's a little big for a PalmPilot, but it leaves enough room for batteries and a little bag of dessicant (extra wetness protection - no, smart-alec, this is not a feminine hygiene commercial).

 Composing Music on the PalmPilot
Current music programs on the PalmPilot are quite limited in that they generally don't handle chords, they don't allow for time signature or key signature changes, and they export via MIDI.
The PalmPilot is quite capable of editing text and, if a suitable textual notation is used, full music entry and typesetting can be done entirely on the PalmPilot.
Returning to the PalmPilot, Mup has the advantage that it offers a full featured music typesetting environment: one can enter text on the PalmPilot complete with all aspects of the music (dynamics, multiple voices, etc.) and then export to the desktop for printing and playing.

The PalmPilot comes with the ability to add GPS navigation for only $27.
Mills said he heard good things about the PalmPilot from a co-pilot with the Australian carrier Qantas, who uses one on board a 747.

I also experienced a couple of hard lockups while in Russian mode and using the TaskList (v.1.12) application (which came as part of the Franklin package), but can not reliably reproduce the behavior, which is fixed with a soft reset.
