But I was assured by an Amtrak employee that our train would consist of a fresh set of equipment taken from the yard, and that we would depart promptly at 3:00 p.m.
Although a number of Amtrak employees were sitting in the lounge car near me, no one objected to the fact that I had brought my own personal food to the lounge car (which is sometimes alleged to violate FDA regulations).

 [No title]
Amtrak's four-member board of directors had a telephone conference call meeting Tuesday to get an update on the Acela status and to discuss a financing plan for the railroad.
Amtrak's expiring board missed an opportunity to put the system on a market-based reform path when it had an opportunity in May of last year to appoint a reform-minded CEO when the previous one resigned.
Further, Amtrak's new management made it clear that it had little interest in fundamental, market-based reform, and is reluctant to cut back or eliminate parts of its far-flung and underused route system, despite the fact that every single one loses money, and some lose substantially more than others.

Amtrak is celebrating its 34th year of operation in Savannah, but there's some question as to how many more years it will provide service.
For Savannah, a city steeped in the tradition of the railroad, it would be a loss from a nostalgic as well as economic standpoint, although local tourism officials say they don't chart the number of people who travel to and from the city by train.
It turned back an amendment by a vote of 337-84-18 to cut 10 percent of all Amtrak funding from the fiscal 1995 appropriations bill as well as an amendment to cut $320 million from Amtrak funding in fiscal 2004 appropriations bill and give it to highways by a vote of 322-90-22.

The Amtrak Board's official request is for about $1.6 billion, but board members also are seeking additional funding for "optional" projects, bringing the total request to almost $1.9 billion, more than double the President's figure.
But it's also clear that many critics are willing to settle for a "rump" Amtrak that serves only the Northeast, the Midwest and the West Coast, and to accomplish that, they are targeting the long-distance overnight trains that serve Georgia and dozens of other states.

Amtrak's remaining New York-Miami runs, the Silver Meteor and the Silver Star, picked up much, but not all of the slack, recording respective ridership gains of 35.6% and 0.6%.
