I don't agree that there aren't a lot of female drummers, but I do agree that "Modern Drummer" focuses around a kind of mainstream, "classic rock," jock mentality which is largely uncomfortable for most women drummers, or women musicians for that matter.
My band mostly plays in smaller, indie-friendly clubs where they are used to female musicians.

I really respected Keith Levene as a musician, and to be honest, in a way he made me feel inadequate because of his ability as a musician, his musicianship: Keith could really play.
There were so many limitations on women musicians that had to be broken.
