All-in-all, the Graphic Novel suffers much of the same problems facing the conventional novel, namely the shrinking of its audience and the continuing difficulty of its creators to make a living at their craft.
Graphic Novels are overall better now in quality than ever in the history of the medium, but with the continuing domination of people's entertainment/art-time by the Big Three popular media -- movies, television and video games – there remains a question of who in the future will be left to read them.

Graphic novel is a disagreeable term, but we will use it anyway on the understanding that 'graphic' has nothing to do with graphics and that 'novel' does not mean anything to do with 'novel'.

It is the perfect graphic novel to change the opinions of snotty elitists who don’t like “comic books.” Of course, if those same elitists can’t see the brilliance in these collected works, at 500 pages, the book can probably be used to beat some sense into them.

There are actually two different things here, "graphic novels," which are to comic books as novels are to short stories, and "epic sagas" or some such term that hasn't been invented yet.
The problem is, most of the graphic novels I would recommend most highly are also those I tend to recommend to people who don't read comics and who don't like superheroes.
Definitely NOT graphic novels in any unified way, but some collections of very, very good comics cheap is Marvel's "Essentials" series, especially "The Essential Spider-Man" (five volumes so far) and "The Essential Fantastic Four." They're dated, obviously (especially the first couple FF), but that's the foundation of the whole Marvel Universe.
