Palomar Observatory is a privately-owned observatory located in San Diego County, California, 90 miles southeast of Mount Wilson Observatory, on Palomar Mountain.
The observatory currently consists of four main instruments: the 200-inch Hale Telescope, the 48-inch Samuel Oschin Telescope, the 18-inch Schmidt telescope, and a 60-inch reflecting telescope.
The Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS), sponsored by the National Geographic institute, was completed in 1958 (The first plates were shot in November 1948 to and the last in April 1958).

The Observatory is located forty-five miles east of downtown San Diego, at an altitude of 6100 ft. (1859 meters) on the remote eastern edge of the Cleveland National Forest.
MLO has grown to include four well-equipped telescopes, ranging in size from 16- to 40-inches (0.4- to 1.0-meters), which are used for original research by the faculty and students of both SDSU and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The Observatory has plans to build a 100-inch (2.5-meter) class Large Robotic Telescope for SDSU's second century, and is actively seeking private funds to start the project; a "naming-gift" opportunity is available.

Like the Abell planetary nebulae, the Palomar globular clusters were discovered in the 1950s on the survey plates of the first Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS).
Others--including Palomar 3, Palomar 4, and Palomar 14 --are giant globulars that are very far away in the extreme outer halo of the Milky Way.
I have observed all 15 Palomar globulars with a 20" telescope.

The 48-inch Schmidt telescope (Oschin telescope) at the Palomar Observatory is a standard Schmidt camera telescope using both lenses and mirrors to create a wide field of view for photographing large sections of the sky at one time.
The telescope was overhauled recently to prepare for the new Palomar sky survey project sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
The Palomar sky survey is the standard reference atlas for deep sky observation and provides a base line with which to measure changes in deep sky observation targets in future surveys.

Palomar 5 was discovered by Walter Baade in 1950, and independently found again by A.G. Wilson in 1955 (A.G. Wilson 1955).
Apparently unaware or unsure about its classification as a globular, it was temporarily taken for a nearby dwarf galaxy, of elliptical or spheroidal type, named the Serpens Dwarf, and suspected to be a Local Group member candidate because of its resolution into stars.
It was found that Palomar 5 is currently undergoing a process of tidal disruption by the gravitation of the Milky Way galaxy.

The county of San Diego began construction of a new road to the summit of Palomar.
The previous big telescope they had built was made out of plate glass and it changes its size when the temperature changes and you can't look at the stars when that happens.
If the Pyrex was in any way damaged during the move, the new state-of-the-art Palomar Observatory would be worthless.

A talented young astronomer at the Mount Wilson Observatory, Steven Smith, was given the assignment of designing an analog computer to refine the pointing of the 200-inch telescope, using a complex and unprecedented collection of three-dimensional cams and gears to correct for minute aberrations in the apparent movements of the heavens.
The seeing on Palomar wasn't equal to the fabulous seeing on Mount Wilson, which benefited from the unusual atmospheric inversion in the Los Angeles basin, but by the early 1930s, with the lights of Los Angeles already a problem for the telescopes on Mount Wilson, the remoteness of Palomar had become an advantage.
John Anderson of the Observatory Committee wrote on behalf of Caltech to point out that since Palomar was the name on the topographic maps, changing it would result in confusion.

Along the way, I stopped at the Harrah's Rincon Casino for lunch; the $14 price tag on the buffet made me wish for the days when casinos considered their restaraunts to be loss leaders, but the food was good and plentifull.
At the observatory, I spent some time checking out the museum and the Hale 200" telescope which is just as impressive as I remember from visits when I was a kid.
I wish more of the observatory grounds were open to the public, however, as there are a number of smaller telescopes and astronomical instruments that would have been interesting to see as well.
