Palookaville (the title is from the classic Marlon Brando line in On the Waterfront about losers) is the debut feature for director Alan Taylor, who has used the stories of post-WWII Italian author Italo Calvino and the 1956 comic heist movie, Big Deal on Madonna Street, as inspirations.
One of the things that elevates Palookaville over the likes of Bottle Rocket and Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead is its character development.

But while Palookaville gets off to an unquestionably cauliflower-ear start, it does feature some punchy amalgams of rock and electronic elements towards its center, and some of the live instrumentation that Cook has touted as part of his new routine eventually begins to make an impression.
Palookaville avoids booming with tired, late-90s big beat fever, but it's never far away from that genre's vacancy, since it aims so squarely for the same old middle of the road.

One of my favorite moments in movie comedy comes in ``Big Deal on Madonna Street'' (1958), when a gang laboriously breaks through a wall, only to find one of their gang standing on the other side, baffled.
Alan Taylor's ``Palookaville,'' which obviously had that moment in mind, opens with an equally hapless gang of thieves, these in Jersey City, breaking through a wall into what should be a jewelry store but turns out to be a bakery, and then loading up on doughnuts.
No doubt ``Palookaville'' will have the millstone of Tarantinoism tied around its neck; any urban crime movie with a lot of guys and a little humor is routinely linked these days with Q.T. But the movie's roots go back further, to a group of short stories by the Italian writer Italo Calvino in the 1940s.

The key to Palookaville is variation; you have a super fast 'Slash dot dash' followed by the more lyrically advanced 'Wonderful Night' and then the slower, more bassy 'Long Way From Home,' (which you may have heard on the 02 adverts).

 Fatboy Slim: Palookaville (2004): Reviews
Palookaville is every bit as rewarding an experience when taken as a cohesive unit as the best songs are when taken individually.
Slim still loves blabbing repetition and dropping yapping vocal samples into the gobs of the dull, and this helps make Palookaville less a reformation than merely his latest and quite bland big beat manifesto.
Palookaville's highlights promise the sweat and smiles that have become Fatboy Slim's stock in trade, but its surprisingly dull lulls offer nothing more promising than a blank expression.

As one of his biggest fans I was slightly disappointed with this latest release in contrast to its dance-rooted counterparts.
As a fan, I’ve come to know Fatboy Slim as two individuals, one being a superstar DJ with the ability to pack 70,000 people onto a beach for some intense house tunes, and the other being the commercial MTV savvy Norman Cook that we’ve come to know and love.
On Palookaville I would have expected Slim to release under his alter-ego moniker Norman Cook.
