As your Mum's favourite superstar DJ, the Fatboy's cut-ups still sound as if they were concocted in the early days of the legendary Heavenly Social, where genres mixed and matched in the holy cause of the greatest night out ever.
Song For Chesh is kitchen-sink Fatboy, a fragmentary vocal there, arching strings there, a striding bass-line and some dusty-fingered stock drums, and new single Slash Dot Dash belongs back in a bin of Skint cast-offs.

Fatboy Slim (aka Norman Cook) had indeed come far from his days as bass player in the poppy English band the Housemartins.
Slim made Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars (Astralwerks) in 2000, a record that was more challenging and less commercial than its predecessor, and also not as good.
Slim is trying to entice us to stay on his fantasy island for a longer visit.

Fatboy Slim: Palookaville - PopMatters Music Review
But strangely enough, for an artist who had released singles and albums under names as strange as Pizzaman, the Mighty Dub Katz and Freak Power, Fatboy Slim was the one that stuck, and the one with which he has seen the greatest success.
Its got one of the album's catchiest hooks, and that is high praise indeed, considering the rest of the disc.
Fatboy Slim is not an artist who even his most ardent admirers usually associate with gripping, emotional songwriting, and the placement of such an unabashedly fun track at the end of the album serves to restore the status quo in Cook's hedonistic world.

 Fatboy Slim: Palookaville (2004): Reviews
Palookaville is every bit as rewarding an experience when taken as a cohesive unit as the best songs are when taken individually.
Slim still loves blabbing repetition and dropping yapping vocal samples into the gobs of the dull, and this helps make Palookaville less a reformation than merely his latest and quite bland big beat manifesto.
Palookaville's highlights promise the sweat and smiles that have become Fatboy Slim's stock in trade, but its surprisingly dull lulls offer nothing more promising than a blank expression.

Looking back on Fatboy Slim's discography, Palookaville is up against some stiff competition, which makes it the low point only because it isn't another beginning-to-end stunner.
The Fatboy himself -- Norman Cook -- had given plenty of hints in the press before the album's release that this was going to be different.
Palookaville could stand one more trimming pass, but it gives Cook's canon the needed depth.

Palookaville, his fourth outing as cartoon dance hero Fatboy Slim, has a distinctly beatnik theme running through it.
This could be because the album is more 'user-friendly' than 'Half way between the gutter and the stars,' in the sense that there is greater selection of songs which are shorter lengths than their predecessors.
