Archimedes (crater) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
To the south of the crater extends the Montes Archimedes mountainous region.
On the southeastern rim is the Palus Putredinis flooded plain, containing a system of rilles named the Rimae Archimedes that extend over 150 kilometers.
North-northwest of Archimedes stand the Montes Spitzbergen, a string of peaks in the Mare Imbrium.

It also includes the one oceanus and the features known by the names lacus, palus and sinus.
There was also a region on the Lunar farside that was briefly misidentified as a mare and named Mare Desiderii (Sea of Dreams).
A related set of features are the Lunar lacus (singular, lacus, Latin for "lake"), which are smaller basaltic plains of similar origin:

 Apollo 15 Lunar Geology Investigation
This was accomplished during the first and second EVAs when Scott and Irwin selected samples from the foot of the mountain scarp and from the ejecta blankets of craters which excavate mountain materials.
he third objective of the mission was to study and sample the reasonably flat mare material of Palus Putredinis on which the LM landed.
Analysis of the samples showed that this mare surface was younger than that visited on Apollo 11, and was closer to the age of the Apollo 12 mare site.

The remaining questions are based on the next image, which is centered near the crater Autolycus in the southeast portion of the Imbrium Basin.
Based on your answers to the questions above, construct two stratigraphic columns showing older units below younger units for the following: (a) crater ejecta for craters 1, 2, 3, Archimedes, Autolycus, and Aristillus; and for (b) plains in Unit 4, Palus Putredinis, and Mare Imbrium.
If features formed at about the same time (or you can't tell whether one is older than another), indicate this in each column by putting the features at the same vertical position.

On September 13, after 33.5 hours of flight, radio signals from Luna 2 abruptly ceased, indicating it had impacted on the Moon.
The impact point, in the Palus Putredinis region, is roughly estimated to have occurred at 0 degrees longitude, 29.1 degrees N latitude.
Some 30 minutes after Luna 2, the third stage of its rocket also impacted the Moon.
