Palynostratigraphy and Palynofacies of Mesozoic and Tertiary sequences in the Porcupine Basin and Rockall Trough Basin, offshore Ireland; with Dr. J.
Palynofacies analysis involves the study of the total particulate organic matter preserved in a sample such as fragments of wood, cuticle and amorphous organic matter as well as the more 'traditional' palynomorphs such as pollen, spores and dionflagellate cysts.
Palynofacies analysis is useful in palaeoenvironmental and palaeogeographical reconstruction, source rock evaluation and correlation at a sub-biostratigraphic level.

PALYNOFACIES IN CHANNEL DEPOSITS OF THE RAJANG RIVER DELTA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The palynofacies of the Rajang River Delta's alternating sand and silt facies are mainly composed of land-derived organic matter with the rare occurrence of identifiable marine organism.
The high amounts of heterogeneous unstructured particles, homogeneous unstructured debris and finely dispersed material indicate that the rate of organic matter degradation within the delta is high.
Palynofacies composition appears to be homogeneous within the delta.

PALYNOFACIES OF HOLOCENE SEDIMENTS IN THE RAJANG RIVER DELTA
The present study concentrates on microscopic and statistical analyses of dispersed OM assemblages recovered from twelve (12) sedimentary facies (the alternating sand and silt facies studied by Feng [1994], was excluded).
The palynofacies suite recovered from the organic-poor facies preserves relatively low percentages of Total structured and relatively high percentages of Total unstructured debris.
Palynofacies from the organic-rich facies have relatively high percentages of Total structured and relatively low percentages of Total unstructured debris.

 BIOSTRATIGRAPHY
Whereas this precludes palynofacies analysis to support lithologically proposed sequence boundaries within the interval, the absence of the palynomorphs indicates extreme oxidation (exposure) of almost 100 ft (30.48 m) of sediment.
This palynofacies is characteristic of upper HST deposits where the shoreline is regressing and environments are becoming increasingly shallow.
The lithologically proposed MFS at 627 ft (191.11 m) is supported by the palynofacies found in the samples at 621 and 629 ft (189.28 and 191.72 m).

Palynofacies 1, which corresponds to lower deltaic plain deposits, contains abundant cuticles (up to 30 %) and palynomorphs (up to 20 %), the latter being mainly represented by schizaeaceous spores and tasmanitids (prasinophyte cysts).
In contrast, palynofacies 2, belongs to the deltaic front lignites and is characterised by abundant amorphous organic matter (up to 60 %) and amber (up to 10 %).

 Applications and Limitations of Palynology
The lithofacies and palynofacies in turn reflect climatic changes from dominantly wet with moderate rainfall to dominantly wet with high rainfall to dominantly dry with low rainfall.
The palynofacies also reflect the size and depth of lakes that developed within the basin (Cornet, 1989a; Cornet and Olsen, 1990); Deep lakes caused by high annual rainfall restricted or eliminated lake margin facies that supported fern and cycadophyte communities, resulting in palynoflorules dominated by diverse bisaccate and circumsaccate pollen from the uplands.

Palynofacies is the study of the composition of acid resistant organic matter in sedimentary rocks, which can be used to aid the interpretation of depositional environments.
Biofacies (microfauna, microflora and palynofacies) analysis represents a geological interpretation of sedimentary dispersed organic material, which together with lithofacies studies can provide the key to identification of depositional environments.
These include standard palynological preparations for palynostratigraphy and palynofacies, washed and picked (quantitative and semi-quantitative) micropalaeontological preparations, thin sections suitable for micropalaeontological and petrographical analyses and nannofossil preparations.

Palynofacies analysis is the study of all organic constituents of a rock sample by transmitted light microscopy.
It yields information on stratigraphy, palaeogeography, palaeoecology and diagenesis and helps in characterising a sedimentary basin and its changes in time and space by using the composition of the organic facies.
For palynofacies analysis the sedimentary organic matter is classified by its origin in a land-derived (allochthonous) fraction, comprising phytoclasts, cuticular fragments, pollen grains and spores, and a marine (relatively autochthonous) fraction comprising dinoflagellate cysts, acritarchs, prasinophytes and foraminiferal test linings.

Palynofacies variations in a carbonate ramp system environment (Upper Muschelkalk, NE France)
Abstract - This study analyses variations in the size of fl woody phytoclast and palynofacies types of shallow subtidal environments evolving to deeper subtidal environments, of latest Illyrdian-latest Fassanian age (Upper Muschelkalk).
Some of the results display some discrepancies between elevated particle sizes that were supposedly deposited in a relative proximal source and the rich veryhachid palynofacies that are thought to represent distal marine environments.

Palynofacies analysis of marine Jurassic sedimentary successions in France and the United Kingdom demonstrates the pervasiveness of regular cycles in qualitative and quantitative aspects of the microscopic particulate organic content of the rocks, especially that part which is ignored during routine palynology.

Core Laboratories is increasingly involved in high-resolution biostratigraphy and palynofacies/biofacies studies fully integrated with seismic, wireline log and sedimentological or lithofacies data.
Detailed palynofacies determination can be of great value for correlation and assist in defining sequence stratigraphic events by putting the relatively few taxonomically based palynological marker events in the correct stratigraphic context.Palynofacies analysis allows the identification of distinct palynosequences bounded by "key" stratal surfaces of regional and/or local sequence stratigraphic significance.
Stratal surfaces recognised from palynofacies associations have been proven to form an invaluable framework within which each palynology event can be seen in its geological context. All this can be achieved independently of, for example, lithofacies, electrofacies and sedimentology.
