Will nutrient loading from Hurricanes Dennis and Floyd accelerate eutrophication of Pamlico Sound?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The researchers on this project believe that years of nutrient loading may enter Pamlico Sound with one event, speed the cultural eutrophication of the sound, and produce conditions similar to those observed in the estuaries.
Because of the recent and predicted future increase in frequency of hurricanes in the Pamlico Sound watersheds, there is an urgent need to assess the sensitivity of the sound to hurricanes and its ability to recover from such extreme events.
In this project, the researchers will assess the water quality of the southern portion of Pamlico Sound related to the recent hurricanes, infer mechanisms by which nutrients are transported from estuaries, and determine ecological response in the sound.

Research in Chesapeake Bay, Pamlico Sound shows hurricanes, runoff tax water quality management
A scientific study that involved analyzing phytoplankton in both North Carolina's Neuse River Estuary/Pamlico Sound and Maryland and Virginia's Chesapeake Bay offers a new lesson in light of recent increased hurricane activity along the East Coast, researchers say.
In water systems, variability in the length of time the water remained in approximately the same place strongly affected seasonal and longer-term patterns of the amount and kinds of phytoplankton present, Paerl said.
Along with UNC and Duke University colleagues, Paerl began monitoring surface water quality in the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound in 2000 with the help of state-run ferries.

The standard model is that blue crab larvae, which spawn at or near the ocean, migrate into the lower salinity waters of the estuary by riding flood tides.
Lab studies have suggested that the larval crabs swim to the surface in response to salinity increases on early flood, and descend again in response to changing turbulence on late flood.
She finds that to get to the western part of Pamlico Sound, where they are observed in abundance, crab larvae must use flood tide transport near the inlets, and also ride wind-driven currents.
