As I mentioned in a previous post the most powerful party's pushing Pan Arabism was the Bathist of Syria and Iraq and the Nasserites of Egypt and, currently, no one in their right mind would want to be associated with them.
Pan Arabism was never tried but was condemned because most of its previous advocates were thieves and criminals.

Bruce Maddy-Weitzman describes the ideology of Arabism as one that developed in the colonial Fertile Crescent states, where the traditional sources of legitimacy and authority were weakest.
Thus even when the Arab states met in Khartoum in August 1967 to debate the meaning of Arabism in the wake of their military defeat and to agree to recognize each other’s sovereignty, the idea of unity lingered, it was just given a slightly different face (Barnett 167).
Yet at the same time he attempted to redefine Arabism so that it was consistent with his policies towards Israel, and to defend his policies by saying they were consistent with Arabism and permitted by Egyptian sovereignty.

I think it is important at this point to make very clear that I am not an economist and, though I feel Pan Arabism is an economic necessity, my knowledge in economics is merely one of an enthusiast with no formal schooling.
Pan Arabism is nothing more than a necessity to the economic, political, and cultural survival of the Arab People in an increasingly competitive world.
To be clear I believe Pan Arabism should be a term meant to reflect "The geopolitical unification of what is widely understood as "The Arab World" into an entity with a united front"

Amir Taheri on Iraq on National Review Online
The idea of dropping Iraq's Arabism is backed by most Shiite parties that want the nation's Islamic identity to be emphasized.
The Kurds also want Arabism to go because the see Iraq as a multi-ethnic nation in which no community should try to impose its specific identity and culture on others.
The Iraqi left is also favorable of abandoning what the poet Fadil Sultani calls "the illusion of Arabism." The reason is that Iraqi Socialists and Communists have been frequently persecuted and, at times, massacred, as enemies of "pan-Arab nationalism."

Whilst I am no lover of the UN you seem to be missing the point that the UN is supposed to put the global needs before that of any one country.
I /KNOW/ that is the stated purpose of the United Nations but in effect what it does is put the national interests of dictatorships, rogue states, and terrorist sympathizers on an equal footing with free societies.

The philosophies of these men have done much to inspire generations of Arab leaders such as Gamal Abdel Nasser, who passionately advocated the changing of the Persian Gulf to "Arab Gulf", or Saddam Hussein, who defined his Arabism by the extent of his brutality against Iranians (Kurds, Persians, etc.).
Not a single one of these scientists hailed from an Arab-speaking region, all were born in what is now Iran or the former realms of Persian speaking world.
It is interesting that Aflaq also rejected those Arabs influenced or sympathetic to Western culture; exactly as Bin Laden does today.
