  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Pan pipes
Pan pipes (also known as panflute, syrinx, or quills) is an ancient musical instrument based on the principle of the stopped pipe, consisting usually of ten or more pipes of gradually increasing length.
The pipes composing it are stopped at one end, so that the sound waves have to travel twice the length of the pipe, giving out a note nearly an octave lower than that produced by an open pipe of equal length.
The pan pipes were most recently popularised by the Romanian musician Gheorghe Zamfir, who toured extensively and recorded many albums of pan pipe music, and by several other artists who began recording at the same time.

 Synthesizing Pan Pipes
The pan pipe — an instrument made from a cylindrical piece of bamboo and tuned to a particular pitch using a wax plug in the bottom — is the same.
This means that the pan pipe shares its tonality with the family of waveforms that includes triangle waves and square waves whereas, as we have seen before, brass is better synthesized using the sawtooth waveform.
Pan pipes may be straightforward to synthesize in software or on something the size of a small wardrobe, but their instantly recognisable 'breathy' sound is not going to emerge unscathed from a Minimoog, Odyssey or SH101.

 The great god pan
Pan belongs to that twilight world of satyrs, fauns, centaurs and sileni, who according to venerable tradition once thronged the globe, and whose descendants may still be glimpsed by the sensitive.
Yet Pan was benign to those who paid him worship, yielding the boons of the divine economy of nature, bounty to the farmers, herders, and fisher-folk who dedicated their first fruits to him, and health to all who properly approached his shrines of healing.
The figure of Ammon was compounded of the forms of the ram, as that of Pan was of the goat; the reason of this is difficult to ascertain, unless we suppose that goats were unknown in the country where his worship arose, and that the ram expressed the same attribute.

The double row often has pipes for the accidentals, (sharps and flats), like a piano keyboard, requiring jumping from row to row to play all the notes.
Of course, each music requires a different style: vibrato, tonguing etc. Romanian style pan flutes are tuned in a regular "diatonic" scale, but by tilting and angling the lips and instrument, you can play a full chromatic scale.
