PAN ARABISM FOLLOWING THE 1948 PALESTINIAN WAR The 1948 defeat can be described as the initiation of profound reappraisal in the Arab society.
The height of the Arabism movement came with the nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956, and it began to crumble with Nasser’s defeat against Israel in the 1967 war.
It is safe to assume therefore, that the main goal of Arabism movement is to prevent or overthrow foreign rule (for which they had been subjected to since the modern civilization) in favor of Arab unity, keeping in mind the individual nation’s best political interest (Tibi).

Bruce Maddy-Weitzman describes the ideology of Arabism as one that developed in the colonial Fertile Crescent states, where the traditional sources of legitimacy and authority were weakest.
Yet at the same time he attempted to redefine Arabism so that it was consistent with his policies towards Israel, and to defend his policies by saying they were consistent with Arabism and permitted by Egyptian sovereignty.
Thus even when the Arab states met in Khartoum in August 1967 to debate the meaning of Arabism in the wake of their military defeat and to agree to recognize each other’s sovereignty, the idea of unity lingered, it was just given a slightly different face (Barnett 167).

The Iraqi left is also favorable of abandoning what the poet Fadil Sultani calls "the illusion of Arabism." The reason is that Iraqi Socialists and Communists have been frequently persecuted and, at times, massacred, as enemies of "pan-Arab nationalism."
As Iraq's political parties and groups continue their wrangling over a new constitution, consensus seems to be taking shape on at least one issue: The future Iraqi state should not be described as "Arab." Some participants also want Iraq to withdraw from the Arab League to contemplate broader alliances in the region and beyond.
The Kurds also want Arabism to go because the see Iraq as a multi-ethnic nation in which no community should try to impose its specific identity and culture on others.

The Palestinian rejection of pan-Arabism and their reliance on local identities instead have been connected with the discrediting of Arabism--both as an ideology and a public philosophy for the Arabs--as a consequence of the 1967 defeat.
Islamic movements took the place of Arabism in becoming the new transcendental movements in the 1980s and 1990s and in posing threats to localism and secularism in the Arab world.
The downfall of traditional Palestinian leaders following the 1936-39 revolt, as well as the failure of Arabism to achieve the goal of liberating Palestine in the 1948 and 1967 wars, were factors that contributed to the growth of an independent and more militant Palestinian elite and movement in the diaspora.

The farce that the Arab League has become certainly suggests pan-Arabism is non-existent in 2004.
However, as time unfolded it was clear that effort, and the wider pan-Arabism, were most probably merely attempts by individual leaders to exert control beyond their own nation’s borders.
If pan-Arabism is merely empire building by individual leaders, it is hardly surprising that the notion of pan-Arabism has never been embraced by the entire Arab world.

Middle East Transparent – The Arab Silence on Darfur Revisited
In our judgment, the Arab silence could only be explained once we understand the true nature of the twin fascisms of Islamism and pan-Arabism that continue to wreak havoc on Arab land, and the impact they are having on the ignorant masses.
As a result, the ignorant Arab masses will continue to be kept hostage to charlatans of pan-Arabism and Islamism, and other Darfurs may be forthcoming.
The much-vaunted reference here is the Koranic verse stating that “ only faith and piety will make a difference between an Arab and an “Ajami” (non-Arab).” This explains to a large extent the historic animosity between Islamism and pan-Arabism.

Whereas the Arab nationalist focus on freedom from foreign intervention demanded a change in the status quo, as the states were granted independence, it became in the ruling groups’ interest to preserve the new status quo and thus their own power bases (Taylor 17).
Arab regimes had their own narrow interests of staying in power, and a desire to pursue them meant following particular policies; yet such a particularist outlook was not enough since to remain in power also required that they establish domestic stability.
