Support for the coalition among the poor and Aboriginals is high because of widespread dissatisfaction with Pan-Green economic policies that have undone the island's famed "economic miracle."
The Pan-Blue Coalition, or Pan-Blue Force (Chinese:泛藍軍; pinyin: fàn lán jūn), is a political coalition in early 21st century Taiwan, consisting of the Kuomintang (KMT), the People First Party (PFP), and the smaller New Party (CNP).
In the 2004 legislative election the three parties from the pan-blue coalition organized themselves to properly divide up the votes (配票) to prevent splitting the vote.

 ROC presidential election, 2004
The theme of the Pan-Green Coalition was to portray themselves as Taiwanese nationalists and reformers and the opposition as corrupt and lacking in loyalty to Taiwan.
In response, the Pan-Blue Coalition planned a series of events they dubbed "Heart Connecting to Hearts." These events included several rallies on 228, a blood drive, and a run in which a torch was passed from person to person through all 369 townships and cities of Taiwan in the course of two weeks.
The Pan-Green Coalition raised the issue of Lien Chan's personal wealth and the properties which they asserted that the Kuomintang had illegally acquired while it was the ruling party.

Pan-Green Coalition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pan-Green Coalition formed in the aftermath of the 2000 Taiwanese Presidential election, after which Lee Teng-hui was expelled from the Kuomintang and created his own party, the Taiwan Solidarity Union, which maintains a pro-independence platform.
In contrast to the Pan-Blue Coalition, the Pan-Green Coalition tends to favor Taiwan independence over Chinese reunification, although members in both coalitions have moderated their policies to reach voters in the center.
The Pan-Green Coalition (Traditional Chinese:泛綠聯盟; Simplified Chinese:泛绿联盟; pinyin: Fànlǜ Liánméng;) or Pan-Green Force (Traditional Chinese:泛綠軍; Simplified Chinese:泛绿军; pinyin: Fànlǜ Jūn), is an informal political alliance in early 21st century Taiwan, consisting of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU), and the minor Taiwan Independence Party (TAIP).

By contrast, the pan-blue coalition agrees that the ROC is independent and sovereign and not a part of the People's Republic of China, but argues that a can be used as the basis for talks with the Mainland.
The current official position of the party is the the Republic of China is an independent and sovereign state whose territory consists of Taiwan and associate island and whose sovereignty derives from the people living on Taiwan.

President of the Republic of China
This usage is actually rather uncommon on Taiwan itself, as members of the pan-blue coalition dislike the term because it implies separation from the concept of China, while members of the pan-green coalition, even those who support Taiwan independence, generally regard calling the office President of Taiwan needlessly provocative.

Flag of the Republic of China - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, the symbolism of the flag began to shift in the early 21st century as there was a warming of relations between the pan-Blue coalition in Taiwan and the Communist Party of China on mainland China.
During the 2004 ROC legislative elections, it was briefly suggested that if the pan-green coalition won the elections that it would force the KMT to change the party emblem to be different from the flag.
The flag of the Republic of China has begun to symbolize the existence of a past and possibly future unified China, and as such the government of the PRC has made it clear that for Taiwan to change the flag would be a major provocation in favor of Taiwan independence.

 German 'red-green' coalition re-elected
The German coalition government, comprising the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens, was narrowly re-elected in the September 22 election.
As a result of the Greens increased vote on September 22, the party may secure another ministry (possibly the justice ministry) in addition to the three it holds — environment (Jurgen Trittin), foreign affairs (Fischer), and agriculture, food and consumer protection (Renate Kuenast).
Greens leader Joschka Fischer used to make comparisons with Nazism to oppose intervention in the Balkans; then, once appointed foreign minister, he made comparisons with Nazism to support military attacks.

The movement is internationally significant because a formal declaration of Taiwan independence would likely lead to a military conflict between the People's Republic of China and the United States.
This viewpoint has not been adopted by more radical groups such as the Taiwan Solidarity Union, which favor only the second view and are in favor a Republic or State of Taiwan.

Year 2004 Legislative Yuan Elections in Taiwan
It was a hard-fought campaign, pitting the "Pan Green" coalition of President Chen's DPP plus the Taiwan Solidarity Union supported by former President Lee Teng-hui against the "Pan Blue" coalition of Mr.
In order to counter the TSU upsurge, President Chen became more "green" and neglected to try to win over people from the political center.
On the other side of the fence, the KMT gained 11 seats for a total of 79, but this gain was at the expense of its junior partner, the PFP, which dropped from 46 to 34 seats.

The party maintains a close but tense relationship with the Kuomintang as part of the pan-blue coalition.
After the expulsion of Lee Teng-hui in 2001, the Kuomintang began espousing policies more closely associated with Chinese reunification and thus the KMT and the PFP are competing for the same set of voters.

The Epoch Times Taiwan's Election Results: Good News, Bad News, Or No News?
Chen Shui-bian and his pan-green coalition remained a legislative minority, meaning a radical push ahead for more sovereignty— and the instabilities that might bring for cross-Strait relations— does not appear in the cards for now.
However, the DPP and KMT have little experience or interest in organizing coalition governments, and neither are well-known for outreach and the politics of compromise.
In fact, Chen's efforts to capture "deep green" voters that normally support the TSU resulted in some moderate voters casting their ballots for rival KMT candidates.

In both Chen's terms the DPP and the Taiwanese independence leaning Pan-Green Coalition failed to secure a majority of seats in the legislature, losing to the KMT and the pro-eventual unification leaning Pan-Blue Coalition, but secured a majority in the National Assembly elections in 2005.
The political scene in the ROC is divided into two camps, with the pro-unification and center-right Kuomintang (KMT), People First Party (PFP), and New Party forming the Pan-Blue Coalition, and the pro-independence and center-left Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and centrist Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) forming the Pan-Green Coalition.
However, more progressive members of the coalition, such as current President Chen Shui-bian, claim that it is unnecessary to proclaim independence because Taiwan is already "an independent, sovereign country" and that the Republic of China is the same as Taiwan.

While the DPP-TSU coalition champions environmental protection, raising the status of women, educational reform, and the rights of various ethnic groups, the central pillar of its political platform consists of the promotion of Taiwan's self-determination (perhaps eventually resulting in a formal declaration of independence) and Taiwanese identity.
Lien's running mate, James Soong (Soong Chu-yu), is the founder of the People First Party (PFP), which has formed a coalition with the much larger KMT.
Second, and perhaps more illuminating, I have found that whereas university students and young workers/professionals tend to throw their support behind the DPP and its program of reform, middle age Taiwanese tend to favor the KMT's return to the center stage of politics.

Another use case is when it is not desirable to make rigorous links to parties, particularly when coalitions and alliances are formed between political parties and other organizations, for example: Red-Green Alliance, Blue-Green Alliance, Pan-green coalition, and Pan-blue coalition.
Obviously, green is the color for green parties.
In Taiwan, New Party uses yellow as its party color though its policies are conservative; Democratic Progressive Party uses green though its international alignment is with the Liberal International.
