In 1939 Panama's protectorate status was ended by mutual agreement, and in 1974 the two countries agreed to negotiate an eventual transfer of the canal to Panama.
One transferred ownership of the canal to Panama (effective from 1990) and the other guaranteed its subsequent neutrality, with the conditions that only Panamanian forces would be stationed in the zone, and that the USA would have the right to use force to keep the canal open if it became obstructed.
Constitutional amendments approved by the assembly in 1991 included abolition of the army and, although this was rejected in a referendum in 1992, in 1994 the army was formally banned as a constitutional entity.

While its ratings have been less than dominant, NBC is reporting record traffic levels for NBCOlympics.com for the current Winter Olympics in Torino, with page views on the site already having exceeded the total number of page views recorded during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
Compared to the most recent Winter Olympics, page views are 80 percent higher than what were delivered on the site during the 2002 games in Salt Lake City--and that's with five days of competition still to come in Torino.
Perhaps most impressive, and most different from Olympics past, is the amount of video streamed to date: NBCOlympics has served up 6.4 million video streams - which equates to a whopping 72,000 hours of footage for the site.
