		Panamint (AGC–13) was laid down as SS Northern Light (MC hull 1354) on 1 September 1943 by the North Carolina Shipbuilding Co., Wilmington, N.C.; launched 9 November 1943; acquired by the Navy 29 February 1944; converted to a general communications vessel at the Todd-Hoboken Yard, Hoboken, N.J.; commissioned 14 October 1944, Capt. E.
		Panamint put her rudder hard right at full speed and swung on the anchor to a position paralleling the course of the approaching plane and torpedo.
		Panamint moored off the shattered naval base that afternoon, and the following morning the formal occupation ceremony was held on her decks.

		Panamint Valley is a 100 mile long, 2 to 10 mile wide depression sandwiched between the Panamint Range on the east and the Argus and Slate ranges on the west.
		The southern playa (south of Ballarat) is about 1,040 feet elevation: the northern one (east of Panamint Springs) is about 1,540 feet, and since the fan is 1,710 feet high, the northern lake cannot drain south until it is 170 feet deep.

		Panamint Valley Days (PVD) is now in it's 21 year.
		This year Chris Dunbar, John Robertson and I headed down to this years event, held near the Panamint mountain range about a hour north of Ridgecrest, CA.
		The trail has been closed to vehicular traffic for about 6 years now but there are legal efforts underway to reopen this access road leading up to Panamint city.

	13th Annual Panamint Valley Days Trip Report
		The normally empty floor of Panamint Valley was transformed into a thriving city with a population of around 500.
		Fish Canyon is in the Slate Range at the south end of Panamint Valley.
		To avoid the waterfalls, the original road may be taken from this point up to the ridge line and back down into the canyon to the base of the #1 fall.
