In a film that imagines the friendship of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth as a series of feverish hallucinations, this is a useful orientation: Pandaemonium is less a BBC costume drama than an attempt to recreate the hazy fog of an opium dream.
Pandaemonium is strongest here, the material so rich that Temple trusts the story to work without the overemphatic visuals and histrionic performances that mar the rest of the film.
His Coleridge is so enamored of both ideas and sensations that he can't focus from one sentence to the next; he's all exuberance, leaping breathlessly from notion to notion.

Milton invented the word as a name for the capital of Hell in his poem, the place where Satan held gatherings of all his underlings and minions.
Milton himself spelled the word "pandaemonium" and concocted it by combining the Greek "pan" (all) with the Latin "daemonium" (demon).
Although Milton had created "pandemonium" as a specific locale, by the 19th century the word was being used as a synonym for any center of vice or depravity.

A behind-the-scenes meeting of the creative minds of director Julien Temple, whose previous, highly visual efforts run the gamut from "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle" to "Earth Girls Are Easy," and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce, who is responsible for "Hilary and Jackie" and "The Claim," the film certainly doesn't skimp on inventiveness.
But two hours later, it all starts getting a bit too precious, with Coleridge surveying the nightlife of modern-day England as a sped-up cover version of Olivia Newton-John's over-the-top "Xanadu" closes out the end credits.
As taking poetic license goes, it falls just short of complete pandaemonium.
