There are two important distinctions between a pandeiro and the common tambourine.
The pandeiro is used in a number of Brazilian music forms, such as Samba, Choro, and Capoeira music (see Capoeira songs).

In a country rich in rhythms and full of a variety of instruments, the pandeiro is considered the Brazilian national instrument and an icon of samba.
The pandeiro is a tambourine with a head made of either animal (goat, calf) skin or plastic.
Although the pandeiro is most commonly associated with samba, it is also used in almost all other Brazilian rhythms and music, including rock, funk and pop.

MELBOURNE SAMBA SCHOOL - The Pandeiro by John Santos   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The Brazilian pandeiro is closest to what is known as the tambourine in the U.S. It is a round frame drum about 10" to 13" in diameter with jingles suspended in the frame and a skin or plastic head stretched over the top.
The pandeiro is held at the frame with one hand in such a way that the index or middle finger can be used to muffle the head from underneath while it is struck on top with the other hand.
All of these sounds are executed near the edge of the pandeiro with the exception of the slap, which can be played in or towards the center of the pancleiro Notes in parenthesis are optional.

The Pandeiro is a Portuguese tambourine with a skin and flat jingles (the little cymbals that go around the side).
The slap is sort of similar to the pandeiro slap (you slap the centre of the skin with a similar technique).
The low tone is made by hitting the skin near the rim like with the pandeiro, but you hit it with the base of your fingers instead of the thumb or finger tips, and you use both hands.

This is unfortunate, in the case of samba, since the time signature no longer reflects the authentic rhythm and most non-Brazilian musicians who play bossa nova music from sheet music written in 4/4 will completely miss the essential features of the rhythm, as a result.
The way I move the pandeiro is to keep the edge of my right hand in contact with the rim while the left hand lifts, then the right hand pushes the pandeiro down rather than using the left hand.
The slower the tempo, the longer the distance you need to move the pandeiro in order to create more time between jingles but, as you go faster, the pandeiro moves less distance and the jingles become softer.

He's found a way to keep the pandeiro at the center of the music, while surrounding it with a rich, appealing texture - Freddie Bryant's guitar and Joel Frahm's saxophone blend perfectly with Scott's rhythms.
Scott wanted to mix the distinct tone of the pandeiro and rhythms he had learned in Brazil with the energy and creativity of the New York jazz scene.
Hearing a different sound in his head, Scott pursued the free, creative improvisation of bop and hard bop and combined this with his love of the pandeiro and "Pandeiro Jazz" was born.

Anyway, the cool thing is how many sounds, including funk and rock, you can get out of the pandeiro.
