It is common in the Pioneer Valley, flying from May to October.
Even as a scanned image, this is a stunning example of the beautiful scientific artwork that was done in the 19th century.

 Eumorpha pandorus
The Pandorus Sphinx Moth, Eumorpha pandorus (wingspan 3 1/4 - 4 1/2 inches (8.2 - 11.5 cm), females larger than males), flies throughout the eastern half of the United States.
Eumorpha pandorus adults are on the wing at dusk from June-August as a single generation in the North and from April - October in the South where there are likely at least two generations.

There are several kinds of hornworms or sphinx caterpillars that often feed on grape leaves.
Some of these are the abbot sphinx, Sphecodina abbotii, the hog caterpillar, Ampelophaga myron, and two less common species, the achemon sphinx, Pholus archemon, and the Pandorus sphinx, Pholus pandorus.
Hand picking is the remedy in common practice, but where the vines are sprayed with methoxychlor, which is among the compounds registered for control of this pest in Connecticut, these caterpillars have been killed.

Several nights ago Charlotte and I were thrilled at the sight of one of the sphinx or hawk moths hovering at our kitchen window, its small eyes clearly "glowing" red with eye-shine from the reflected lights within our house.
Larvae of Pandorus Sphinx Moths start out being green for the first several instars and then either remain green or gradually turn brown for the remainder of their larval stages or instars, usually five in number.
The caterpillars of the Pandorus Sphinx Moths, having finally eaten their fill of either the leaves of grapes or Virginia Creeper in this region, will crawl to the ground and slowly dig themselves several inches downward.

The exactitude of these correspondences suggests to me that they cannot be actual reigns of anybody.
That the Pandorus list means years might be inferred from the fact that Pandorus uses fractions of 12, i.e.
So I think you are on the right track here in presuming that Pandorus meant years and that Manetho meant synodic months.

I was confused because the only pictures of Eumorpha pandorus that I had found showed the brown forms - not the bright green one that we saw.
It's nice to know what it was that we found.
It's a Pandorus Sphinx Moth, (Eumorpha pandorus) of which I've photographed myself, but I've never seen one so green..

If you do manage to identify it please post it.
He, or she, is a Pandorus sphinx (Eumorpha pandorus).
The one pictured on thier site was slightly paler in color (or maybe faded since it was a picture of an obviously mounted specimen with wings spread).
