Some drummers use a china cymbal, a sizzle cymbal or a specialised tone such as a swish or pang cymbal as a ride cymbal.
The ultimate decision as to the suitability of a particular cymbal for a particular purpose remains with the drummer.
In rock or jazz, the ride cymbal is most often struck regularly in a rhythmic pattern as part of the accompaniment to the song.

In western music, china type cymbals are cymbals deliberately manufactured to have a "trashy" tone in some ways similar to a chau gong.
On the other hand, the Sabian roctagon cymbals and some Ufip models are considered china types while having none of the physical characteristics of the normal china type, while the Paiste crystal crash is considered a European cymbal despite its squarish bell.
China type cymbals are available in a wide range of sizes from 27" down to 6", most types singly but some in pairs.

Swish cymbal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The swish cymbal and the pang cymbal are exotic ride cymbals originally developed as part of the collaboration between Gene Krupa and the Avedis Zildjian Company.
Both the swish and the pang have an upturned rim and are most often but not always mounted bell down, and in this and their tone are similar to a china cymbal.
The swish has a higher tone than the pang and is washier with a less pronounced ping, and this difference was accentuated as the swish was originally sold with rivets already installed (see sizzle cymbal) while the pang was sold without rivets.

Sizzle cymbal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A sizzle cymbal is a cymbal to which rivets, chains or other rattles have been added to modify the sound.
The most common form of sizzle cymbal used in a drum kit is a large ride cymbal with a number of rivets loosely fitted but captive in holes spaced evenly around the cymbal close to the rim.
Swish and to a lesser extent pang cymbals with rivets in this way were heavily used as main ride cymbals in the Swing band era.

Exceptions are when a sizzle or china type is used as a secondary ride, when it will often be a size larger but thinner than the main ride in order to give a similar volume and sensitivity, and in big_band situations where the main crash was traditionally slightly larger than the main ride.

The basic setup for any drummer consists of three cymbals of different types; a crash cymbal for highlighting or punctuating the music, a ride cymbal for keeping time in certain parts of the song e.g.
Cymbal manufacturers will be only too pleased to send you their leaflets or catalogue which will tell you about the many different sizes, weights and finishes available, and will describe the very different sounds these factors produce.
The basic difference is that the former are individually cast in moulds whereas non-cast cymbals are cut from metal sheets.

Decide where your cymbal likes to lie on the stand (they generally have some preference where they end up rotating to, based upon the weight distribution of the cymbal) and position your rivets out of the stick target area.
With the cymbal upside down on a wooden workbench, the top surface positioned so it's parallel to the table, use a center punch and be sure it's exactly perpendicular to the table and to the axis of the cymbal - now with one good smack of the hammer, indent your drillbit placement position.
Hold the cymbal up like you're testing it at a store and whack it with your bare hands and look at the wobble (btw, if the cymbal does not have ABUNDANT wobble, I would reccomend NOT drilling it) and try to get a handle on what part of the cymbal you think is wobbling most.

Gene Krupa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His drum method was published in 1938 and immediately became the standard text.
His influence eventually standardized the combination of 8 x 12" and 9 x 13" hanging toms mounted on the bass drum, and he developed and popularised many of the cymbal techniques that became standards.
His collaboration with Armand Zildjian of the Avedis Zildjian Company developed the hi-hat stand and standardized the names and uses of the ride cymbal, the crash cymbal, the splash cymbal, the pang cymbal and the swish cymbal.

Purchase: I purchased this particular ride cymbal from CandC Drum and Guitar in Lawrence, Kansas, in the Fall of 1998.
To me, it just seemed like there was never any decay in the cymbal; it rang on and on through the quietest parts of the music, and basically became a nuisence on stage.
So began "The Search for the Perfect Ride Cymbal." (Modern Drummer, June, 1997) This is why I was so thrilled to write about my findings: The VERY first cymbal I happened upon in my search, is the same cymbal that's on my kit right now.

Unbridled power is the first adjective you apply to Fieldwork as on many numbers Stewart fires off phrase after phrase, double and triple tonguing; Kavee exercises his cowbell, woodblock and cymbals without slackening the constant beat; and Iyer's rhythmic thrust encompasses Thelonious Monk-style key clipping, rolling bass lines and sliding swinging forward motion.
The first, a flowing andante melody is based around the dark coloration of the piano's bass cadenzas, using lots of sustain pedal.
Kavee's ride cymbal pressure signals the frequent tempo changes, while Stewart's solo is all straightahead.
