A retracing of the 1960 Hillary expedition was attempted, and an extensive interview was conducted with Khumjung village elder Khonjo Khumbi, who had accompanied Sir Edmund and Perkins back to the United States with a supposed Yeti scalp from the Buddhist monastery.

The walk to Pangboche was another short one and deliberately so as it broke up the 500m altitude gain from Tengboche to Dingboche and gave us an acclimatisation catch up opportunity.
Pangboche is really 2 separate villages about 10 minutes apart and although it is possible to reach the upper village without passing through Lower Pangboche, we missed the path and had to detour via the lower village to get back up the hill.
It was cloudy when we left Pangboche at about 9:30 but we did at least get partial views of Thamserku and Ama Dablam.

I know it's not frostbite because my toes and fingers are pink in color, but the tips of both my toes and my fingers seem to be numb.
Today we will hike all the way back to Pangboche which is at 13,200 ft..
Since all of our drinking water has to be boiled, I leave with two hot water bottles in my hand and immediately throw them into the bottom of my sleeping bag.

In addition to climbing Mount Everest in 1953, one of the major goals of Sir Edmund Hillary in the Himalayas was to spy on Chinese rocket experiments and disprove the existence of the "Abominable Snowman," although he did this on a return trip in 1960-61.
At a monastery in Pangboche, Nepal, he was presented with a "scalp" made from the skin of a serow, a creature similar to a goat herded by Sherpas, that he thought was evidence enough that the creature was a hoax, but he was also presented with a skeletal hand.
Hillary could not have been more correct, but this was not the hand that the Sherpas had for explorers to encounter just a few years earlier.

We've done all the filming around the village and at the old MONASTERY in upper PANGBOCHE, which most trekkers miss because the main trail to EVEREST BC from NAMCHE BAZAR is five minutes bellow the upper village.
We left PANGBOCHE, elevation 1200 feet at 10am and our destination was the ITALIAN Research Center, also know as "PYRAMID", elevation 16700', because it is built in a pyramid shape.

As this is further than Periche, you will definitely need to stop the night in Pangboche or Dingboche.
Guides are definitely not necessary if you are traveling no higher that Tengoche or Pangboche.
Not only can they guide you on the right path and explain local sights, but can be invaluable should you fall ill. Guides need an official licence to operate and speak English (and often other languages - specify your choice when hiring).

After a 500m descent and rest, he was able to successfully reascend and climb two ridges over 5500m (18,000 ft) in altitude.

Today you will leave the luxury of Pangboche for the more primitive accommodation at the snout of the Khumbu Glacier.
The path forks here - take the left hand fork (the right hand fork goes to Dingboche).
I would have thought Pangboche to Pheriche/Dingboche more typocal, then Lobuche then Gorak Shep a more practical option.
