 Open Source Awards 2004: Pango
The stated goal of the ambitious Pango open source project is to provide a framework for the layout and rendering of internationalized text.
Pango 1.2, the current version of this award-winning framework, prefers the fontconfig and Xft2 libraries for locating and rendering fonts on Linux and UNIX.
The design of Pango is to have a compact core that's independent of all the different script modules and operating system back ends, and then let people interested in one script or another write the module for that script.

Pango neds to know if a particular character is a paired character, so that it can keep track of some complicated nesting rules defined by the Unicode standard.
To know if a character is a paired character, Pango has another little lookup table (look for "paired_chars" in pango-script.c); it would simply do a binary search on that table.
In Pango we don't need an extra bit per row: if the gunichar column inside a row is 0, we know that the row is invalid, as 0 is not a valid Unicode point.

One of the most important is an "attributed string." Abstractly, this is a sequence of attributed characters, each of which is a pair of the raw character and a map from attribute tag to attribute value.
The heart of the Pango design is the abstract shaping engine.
Essentially, the shaping process is split into two parts; a highly script-specific, yet font technology independent part (the abstract shaping engine), and a part specific to the font technology, but with much of the script-specific complexity removed.
