Panhard rod - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Panhard rod is a component of a car suspension system that provides lateral location of the axle.
It is a simple device, consisting of a rigid bar running sideways parallel to the rear axle, connecting one end of the axle to the car body or chassis on the opposite side of the vehicle.
Its major disadvantage is that the axle must necessarily move in an arc, relative to the body, with the radius equal to the length of the Panhard rod.

The roll axis with a panhard and a three link goes from the point in the middle of the panhard to the other horizontal restraint point, which is found just like in a four link ie top view intersection of the lower two links.
The two bad characteristics of the panhard is it makes the axle move sideways and asymetrically as the suspension compresses.

Having a perfectly horizontal panhard bar cuts in half the amount of left-right movement resulting from the up-down movement of the panhard bar.
The stock panhard is higher on the right side, so as the rear squats in acceleration, the center of the car moves slightly over to the right side, which is good because axle twist is tending to unweight the right side.
If the panhard were exactly horizontal at static ride height then the total movement would be 50% to the left for occasions of unweighting the rear axle and 50% to the right for weighting the rear axle.
