The remains of the city of Banyas (Arabic pronunciation of Panias) are located in northern Israel, at the foot of Mt. Hermon.
During the Arab period, the city was the district capital of the Golan in the province of Damascus and its name was changed to Banyas.
Around the year 100 (the 100th anniversary of Panias), during the reign of Trajanus Caesar, a Temple of Zeus was built at Banyas, east of the previous one.

The ruined city was known as Dan or Mivzar Dan by the Jews ("the Fort of Dan"; a suggested identification with the biblical Beth-Rehov is uncertain).
Later, the city belonged to the Itureans, from whom it was transferred by Augustus to Herod, who named it Ceasarea in honor of Augustus and to whom he erected a temple there.

The city of Panias was given to the King Herod by the Roman emperor, Augustus.
Fragments of walls found some 70 m (215 ft) southwest of the rock escarpment, built in the Roman technique of Opus reticulatum, i.e., in a herring-bone pattern, may be remnants of this palace.
He further beautified the city and renamed it Caesarea Philippi, a name by which it is mentioned Matthew 16:13-20 and Mark 8:27-30 as the northernmost point visited by Jesus and his disciples.
