Dan Heller's Movie Review of "Panic Room"
Panic Room, the latest film from David Fincher, is billed as a thriller, and while the script is intelligent and there are certainly suspenseful scenes, the movie ultimately fails to achieve the very essence of what makes a thriller thrilling.
The problem with "Panic Room" is that it tries too hard to build suspense for its own sake, while failing to develop characters and their motivations.
All that said, he movie isn't entirely bad - the script is intelligent, especially in the beginning, and the characters' profiles are developed slowly, smartly, and with a sense of discovery.

Panic Room is the story of Meg Altman (Foster), a recently divorced woman, and her daughter Sarah (Stewart), who decide to purchase a house in Manhattan.
I'll admit that the idea of the panic room itself is somewhat novel in movies (in medieval times, there was the castle keep), but that's about as far as it goes.
Unfortunately, the violence in this movie is a necessary evil, since the whole point of the panic room is to protect one's self against it.

The movie addresses two times the fact that Jodie foster's phone connectivity wasn't working properly, (the reason she relied on the cellphone in the first place, dumbass), and the fact that she hadn't even CALLED to activate the secondary, _secure_ line.
The absolute opportunistic nature of criminals is touched upon perfectly in the movie, wherein they knew the valuables were in the house, but they had to wait until no one was in it, and the security system would be down.
