On 8 June 2005, abundant rains in Panjakent district (Sughd Oblast) resulted in torrential floods.
On 11 June 2005, a coordination meeting organized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations was conducted in Panjakent district.
After the assessment, the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan responded to immediate needs by setting up a temporary shelter and distributing 80 mattresses, 70 family tents, 300 woollen blankets, 80 sets of bed linen, 60 kitchen sets, 48 kerosene stoves, 50 shovels, 50 hoes and water purification tablets for 70 families.

Wednesday, January 2, 2002, 20:50 UZ The Jarteppa border checkpoint on the Tajik-Uzbek border between Tajikistan's [western] Panjakent District and Uzbekistan's [eastern] Samarkand Region, which was temporarily closed and virtually failed to operate throughout the year, began functioning at the new year.
A Varorud correspondent in Panjakent has reported that the opening of the border checkpoint was made possible by a meeting between the presidents of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan [on 27 and 28 December].
Residents and businessmen in Panjakent District are expressing their gratitude to the heads of the two states.

 APD - ADRA Assists Flood Survivors in Tajikistan
Throughout July, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) International has provided emergency relief aid to 2,325 people affected by flooding in the Panjakent and Hamadoni regions of Tajikistan.
From July 10 to July 17, ADRA delivered emergency aid to 215 families in Panjakent, providing 22 tons of essential food items, such as vegetable oil, sugar, rice, flour, and children’s food, and emergency nonfood supplies, such as kitchen utensils, blankets, bedding, towels, and clothes.
The total project is valued at US$9,782, and is funded by ADRA International, ADRA Tajikistan, and ADRA Euro-Asia, the regional headquarters for ADRA in Russia.

In the event that arbitration fails, unions have the right to strike, but both labor unions disavowed publicly the utility of strikes in the current economic crisis and advocated compromises between management and workers.
In May and September, teachers in the northwest city of Panjakent went on a union-declared strike, claiming that they had not been paid; although they returned to work, they had not been paid at year's end.

Source: National Statistics Committee Construction & Transport $200M RAILWAY PROJECT Panjakent, Northern Tajikistan local authorities and Sam Bu, a South Korean company, agreed to link the Zarafshon valley in Northern Tajikistan to a railway network in the Samarkand Region of Uzbekistan.
According to Sam Bu, the South Korean company intending to setup a joint venture in Panjakent to produce mineral fertilizers, the railway project will cost about $200m.
Representatives of Sam Bu met with local authorities in Panjakent and Samarkand Region and recently applied for Tajik government permission to build this railway.

The first detailed report of the use of antipersonnel mines by Uzbekistan surfaced on 6 September 2000 when it was reported that engineer troops of the Uzbek armed forces mined “an area where one could pass to Iskandar Lake through Bodomiston Pass, 4,570 meters above sea level.
They were identified by the Tajik authorities as itinerant workers from the village of Amondara in the district of Panjakent.
Returning from four months of seasonal work in Uzbekistan, it appears they had decided to illegally cross the border, and had fallen victims to Uzbek mines.

Mahkamov has said in an interview with our correspondent that only people are currently allowed to pass the border via this checkpoint, but the transit of traffic from Panjakent in the directions of [the administrative centre of northern Soghd Region] Khujand and [the Tajik capital] Dushanbe, according to agreements, must be resolved soon.

In 1995 an Italian company began construction of a textile factory in Tajikistan.
One of the most important foreign undertakings in the country was a joint venture with a Canadian firm, the Zarafshon Mining Project, to mine and process gold at three known sites in the Panjakent area of northwestern Tajikistan and to prospect in an area of 3,000 square kilometers for additional deposits.
The agreement was concluded in 1994; production began in January 1996.
