Ahmad Shah Massoud, known as "The Lion of Panjshir" was a famous leader who was assassinated by a suicide bomber on 9 September, 2001.

PANJSHIR:- Out of a 110 usable and repairable heavy weapons collected from Afghan provinces, 80 pieces were collected from the northern Panjshir province, the UN said Sunday 27th.
The weapons from Panjshir which included tanks and different types of cannons, were eventually moved to Jabal Saraj regiment.
Mohammad Zahir Azemi, a spokesman for the defense ministry in Kabul, said that this was the fifth stage of moving weapons from the province.

The first of its kind, the Panjshir PRT is a joint effort between the members of CJTF 76 and the U.S. Embassy.

Believe it or not there were times during the taliban era when there were just only 50-100 Taliban militias in a province only and there were no crimes, looting,corruption, killings, insecurity, instability etc. in that entire province.
You were able to drive alone at night in the barren tracks carrying with yourself a stock of gold and treasures, and nobody would have harmed you or stole from you.

Kabul, 23 January (IRIN) - Diplomats of various countries have visited the first Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) headed by a US civilian in the northern Panjshir province to observe reconstruction efforts in the area, a statement by the US-led Coalition forces said on Sunday.
A joint effort between the members of CJTF-76 and the US Embassy in the capital Kabul, headed by Fletcher Burton, a US Department of State civilian, the Panjshir PRT is the first of its kind in the post-conflict country.

The ousted government is able to generate revenue mainly through its mining operations and the export of precious stones (especially lapis lazuli and emeralds) from the Panjshir Valley and other areas still under its control.

Projects were ongoing with internally displaced people in Balkh, Baghlan, Herat, Kandahar and Kunduz provinces, while nutritional aid in Nimruz and Sar-i Pul provinces came to an end in May 2002.
