The county derives much of its income from the extraction of oil, gas, and coal; in 1990, 1,356,000 barrels of crude oil were produced in the county.
County officials were elected on July 18, and a second election on August 23 chose Pulaski, by a small majority, as the county seat.

Panola County was established February 9, 1836, and is one of the twelve large northern Mississippi counties created in that year out of the Chickasaw Cession of 1832.
On February 1, 1877, when Quitman County was created, Panola surrendered a small fraction of its southwestern area to assist in forming that county, which reduced Panola from an area of 756 square miles to its present land surface of 705 square miles.
In the county the population was spread out with 29.40% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who were 65 years of age or older.

Born in Lincolnton, the county seat of Lincoln County, North Carolina in 1829, Abel Theodore Cansler was the fourth of eleven children born to Henry Cansler and Frances Shuford.
Richard Floyd served as a private in the 33rd Mississippi regiment, Featherston's Brigade during the Civil War and was captured during the Battle of Bakers Creek (Battle of Champion Hill) and was taken to the Union prison in Elmira, NY where he was held for two years.
He applied for his pension September 4th, 1899 in Prentiss County, MS, and stated that he was 67 years old; had been a resident of Mississippi for 41 years; was currently married; and that he had one brother, two sons and a daughter.

I do not yet know whether I will live in Panola County, or somewhere (Marks?) in the Delta to the west, or in Lafayette County to the east.
I like this map because I have seen no other of Panola County, and because of the clarity with which it indicates the Delta, which is ambiguous on most maps though it is not ambiguous when driving into or out of it.
