Panopeus partook of the ruin of the other cities of Phocis at the end of the Phocian war, but like them also was re-established by the Athenians and Thebans a little before the battle of Chæroneia.
In the time of Pausanias, although it had neither agora, nor theatre, nor gymnasium, nor fountain, nor public building for the use of the magistrates, and consisted only of huts on the side of a torrent, it was still called a city, and sent deputies to the Phocic council.
Panopeus having been placed between two cities, which were themselves not 5 miles asunder, seems to have derived its importance from being the frontier fortress of Phocis, towards Boeotia.

Darwin And Modern Science by Sir Albert Charles Seward eBook by BookRags
Eastward, clinging to the slopes of the bleak range of which the hill of Panopeus forms part, were the ruins of Chaeronea, the birthplace of Plutarch; and out there in the plain was fought the disastrous battle which laid Greece at the feet of Macedonia.
A grey November mist hung low on the hills which only yesterday had shone resplendent in the sun, and under its melancholy curtain the dead flat of the Chaeronean plain, a wide treeless expanse shut in by desolate slopes, wore an aspect of chilly sadness befitting the battlefield where a nation’s freedom was lost.
But crowded as the prospect from Panopeus is with memories of the past, the place itself, now so still and deserted, was once the scene of an event even more ancient and memorable, if Greek story-tellers can be trusted.

Adult females of Panopeus africanus A. Milne Edwards, 1867 and Uca tangeri (Eydoux, 1835) were sampled fortnightly from April 1989 to November 1991 in the Rio San Pedro inlet (SW Spain) to estimate the seasonal timing of their reproductive periods.
Planktonic larvae were collected monthly from July 1991 to June 1992 by pumping during nocturnal flood and ebb spring tides to establish seasonal larval abundance patterns.

 CESI- SMMS METADATA REPORT
Although Whitewater Bay is one of the primary nursery habitats for pink shrimp and an important recruitment site for juveniles, pink shrimp tend to be more abundant in areas structured by Thalassia and Halodule (Sheridan 1996).
Occurring at higher frequencies than expected were species associated with oyster beds, including the snapping shrimp Alpheus heterochaelis (which burrows in oyster clumps and rubble), the mud crab Eurypanopeus depressus and other xanthid crabs in the genus Panopeus.
Again, because of the preponderance of oyster reef in area 4 compared to other areas, abundance of these reef-associated species is to be expected.
