The Great Canadian Guide to the Movies & TV: Ci-Cl
The problem with this expensive-looking TV series is that, for all its intentions to be a big, sprawling slice-of-urban-life, exposing the grit as well as the glamour, it comes across like it was made by people whose life experiences had been gleaned sitting in front of a television set.
The series bore more than a passing resemblance to the CBC's earlier Riverdale -- also a drama set in Toronto about a panorama of characters ranging from the rich to the poor, and how the two groups interact.
Made by the same people who did the hit movie, Mambo Italiano, this TV series covers similar territory, and seemed like a logical idea (successful movie = successful TV series).

The Second International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities: Presentation Details
This is true not only because of the historical importance of this work, which has influenced generations of Italians – having been passed down not only as a book for children and young teens, but also in school texts and, more recently, through cartoons and TV series.
In the cultural panorama of late 19th century Italy, Edmondo De Amicis emerges as one of the writers who were most aware of the gravity of the Italian “social question” and who were most actively concerned with it.
Nowadays, in fact, De Amicis’ novel has acquired a new dimension of up-to-dateness, due to the very particular social and emotional situation of today’s Italy – since one of the main themes informing this work is precisely the relationship between Italy and the Italians.
