In the 1999 general elections, the DAP won only one Parliamentary seat -- through Fong Po Kuan in Batu Gajah and four State seats, Sitiawan, Pantai Remis, Menglembu and Pasir Bedamar -- despite contesting in nine Parliamentary and 17 State seats.
He said Ipoh Timor, currently held by MCA's Thong Fah Chong, was considered the best seat for Kit Siang as it was one of the few Parliamentary seats in the country with the highest number of Chinese voters.
During its heyday the DAP won four Parliamentary and 13 State seats in both the 1986 and 1990 general elections but managed only the Sitiawan State seat in 1995.

 BUKTI KENG YAIK AKAN KALAH
Persistent reminder irks Keng Yaik By Raslan Baharom PANTAI REMIS: A ceramah at Kampung 40 Rantai near here on Thursday turned sour when a villager pestered Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik to allocate three computers to SK Ladang Huntley, a pledge he purportedly made five years ago.
Irritated by the persistent reminder, the Gerakan president said the pledge would have been fulfilled had the school's Parent-Teacher Association contacted the district education office as he had set up a special fund for the purpose.
To this, Lim, who is Bruas MP, said he had contacted the Education Ministry but the student population in the vicinity did not meet the criteria to justify building a new secondary school.

Media Statement by Lim Kit Siang
According to a Bernama report, Keng Yaik said in Pantai Remis that Malaysian Chinese and Indians were watching with apprehension the constant attacks by the opposition on the government and the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad to try and divide the Malays.
I would call on Keng Yaik and other Barisan Nasional leaders to halt such dangerous racial politics, end such a pernicious line of politicking and to start thinking as Malaysians for a change.
Lim Keng Yaik made a very dangerous statement yesterday, when he insinuated that the Opposition parties in Malaysia were trying to divide the Malays.

Is this one of the ways the Barisan Nasional leaders will try to make the next general election the "dirtiest" in history - by communalising what is a non-communal movement supported by all Malaysians regardless of race and religion for justice, freedom, democracy and good governance in Malaysia?
