Pantherinae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pantherinae is the sub-family of the family Felidae which include the genera Panthera, Uncia, Neofelis, Profelis, Mayailurus and possibly the genera Caracal, Leptailurus, Pardofelis.
The Pantherinae subfamily can be classified as such:

InfoHub - Snow Leopards and the Pleistocene
Taxonomically the snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is considered a member of the Felidae subfamily Pantherinae (Blomqvist 1978), Novak and Paradiso 1983).
However, on the basis of morphology and behavior, some authors place it in a separate genus, with the name Uncia uncia (Pocock 1917, Peters 1980), (Rieger 1980b, Hemmer 1967, 1972, Anonymous 1987c).
As in other Pantherinae, the diploid chromosome number in snow leopards is 38 and the fundamental number is 36.

Lion,Wild Animal Lion,Wild Animal King Lion
The legacy of the lion, King of Beasts, as the model throughout history is demonstrated by its appearance among the earliest drawings made by humans over 15,000 years ago.
Species: Of the known sub-species of lion there seems to be an agreement on 2 as far as genetics go - Pantherinae Panthera leo leo - the African lion, and Pantherinae Panthera leo persica - the Asian lion.
Regardless of the area of Africa a lion is found in today, their DNA analysis has shown them to be the same, whereas there is a difference between African and Asian.

While all species of cats are closely related and classified as one family, the Felidae, genetic research has shown the clouded leopard to be more closely related to the large cat species.
For this reason, clouded leopards are considered a member of the Pantherinae - a subfamily of the Felidae family that also includes lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, and snow leopards.
Clouded leopards are not a “type” of leopard as their name implies.

Cat Species   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
There are now four genera (7 species) in the Pantherinae subfamily; one genus (one species, the Cheetah) in the Acinonyxchinae subfamily; and 13 genera (28 species) in the Felidae subfamily.
The Pantherinae and Acinonyxchinae are the so-called 'Big cats'.
Pumas and lynx are members of the subfamily Felidae and is therefore not officially a 'Big Cat'.

The family of cats is divided up into three sub-families: Cheetahs (Achinonychinae), smaller cats (Felinae), including the puma (cougar) and large cats (Pantherinae).
Our FAQs at this time will include only the certain members of the sub-family Felinae which contains 13 genera and 28 species of small cats, lynxes and the cougar.
Many are listed as CITES I and are some are also on USFW Threatened and Endangered list.

Classification of the Felidae   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Today’s thinking places the 36 species of wild cat family - Felidae - into three basic groups or sub-families - Felinae, Pantherinae and Acinonychinae, with its sole member Acinonyx jubatus - the Cheetah - see table below.
Within the sub-families Felinae and Pantherinae the species are split into various sub classifications or genera - a total of 13 genera in the Felinae sub-family and 4 in the Pantherinae sub-family, whilst the sub-family Acinonychinae, as already mentioned has one genus.
The various species can also be split into sub-species dependant on various criteria.

 Species Information
As you may have noticed in the past, many different books gave different taxonomies - for example, the snow leopard being in 'panthera' or 'uncia', all small cats being 'felis' vs many different small cat genera, etc.
The new taxonomy agreed to basically divides the former Felis and Panthera groups into 13 and 4 genera respectively, for a total of 18 genera (13 in the Felidae subfamily, 4 in the Pantherinae subfamily, and 1 in the Acinonychinae subfamily).
There are still 36 species (the Iriomote cat is officially a subspecies of Leopard cat, and the Canadian, Eurasian, and Iberian Lynxes are officially different species, not subspecies).

It can grow to 45-60cm and can weight 4-7kg.
The total number of the specimen is unknown but the cat is considered to be endangered and is listed in CITES Appendix 1.

The Iwokrama Forest is an excellent example of robust, relatively undisturbed lowland tropical forest with many endangered large to medium sized mammals such as Jaguars, several species of monkeys, Giant Armadillos, and Giant Otters - all rare or absent in disturbed forests.
Jaguars are the American members of Subfamily Pantherinae, which includes lions, tigers and leopards.
Found also here in Iwokrama Forest are large populations of game mammals such as Pacas, White-lipped Peccaries, Brazilian Tapir, and Red Brocket Deer (Mazama americana).
