  Visit Tunbridge Wells Title
The Pantiles and Tunbridge Wells itself, owe their beginnings to the discovery of the Chalybeate Spring in the early 17th century and the popularity of the spa water amongst the gentry and royalty of Georgian England.
Richard Beau Nash, a dandy of the day made it his business to ensure that this protocol was adhered to by acting as a kind of Master of Ceremonies during 'the season' in Tunbridge Wells and in the town's rival, Bath.
The Spring situated at the northern end of the Pantiles still flows, and the reputedly health-giving water is served in the summer months by a traditional 'Dipper'.

  SPAB: Technical Q&A 9 : Clay Pantiles
Pantiles are not to be confused with Roman tiles, which differ in profile.
Substitution with concrete pantiles, profiled steel decking or plain tiles is undesirable as, generally, is replacement of handmade pantiles with machine-pressed ones (or vice-versa).
Depending on circumstances, replacement pantiles can be mixed with old ones across the roof or reserved for less prominent slopes. With patch repairs, carefully-sourced second-hand pantiles give a better fit than new ones.

Pantiles Tennis Club (circa 1920 - 1940) and Swimming Pool
When we moved to Pantiles House our next door neighbours were Sydney and Meg Lowry, who had been there since 1937 and who were regular members of St. Anne's and it was from them that we learned virtually everything we know of the history of the house.
Pantiles House was originally built for a/the personal secretary of the Duke of Connaught living at the park.
In one of the downstairs rooms at Pantiles House there was a small newspaper cutting which we left there when we departed recording that the Duke himself had visited Pantiles House in 1938 to view one of these exhibition matches.

 The Pantiles
The Pantiles, the old commercial center of Tunbridge Wells, is a 17th century pedestrian-only shopping street (what the Brits call a 'precinct') that could be the ancestor of a modern American strip mall.
A century later, the clay pantiles were replaced with paving stones and the name was changed to the "Parade," but the original name was brought back late in 19th century.
During the summer there are open air music concerts in the Pantiles and a five-day Georgian Festival — Scandals at the Spa — that celebrates the centuries old heritage of this unique attraction in Royal Tunbridge Wells.

Madsen Pirie wins his battle for red pantiles | Samizdata.net
Where I had red pantiles there had to be blue slates.
And that's hardly to mention the powers that this lady does now legally possess, even over the likes of Madsen Pirie, and over anybody else begging for permission to build something on what is supposedly their own property, within her domain.
So, even though Madsen won his particular little pantile battle, this is still a very nasty war and not one that our side is anywhere near to winning.
