The purpose of this article is to evaluate the different plastic model kits of the Panzer IV which are available in 1/72nd scale, by comparing their strengths and weaknesses.
IV F1/F2 turret for use on the ESCI kit, but chances are good that it will also fit the Revell and Hasegawa hulls.
I've measured their wheels and tracks as well, and while their tracks are all a hair too wide, the wheels on all three kits are spot-on for 1/72nd.

With Tristar discontinuing the intiial Panzer IV Ausf.D (kit #35015) and replacing it with the new release Panzer IV Ausf.D/Tauch (kit #35023) this comparison has been updated to take into account the new and updated parts in the new kit.

IV was meant as an infantry support tank, to use against bunkers, etc.
The Panzer 38t chassis becomes the Jagdpanzer 38 and fully-tracked infantry carriers and I have a much better quality of armour which I can mass-produce while the Tiger II is developed.(The chance of being able to push through a rational programme with the characters 'running' the show would be very remote, of course...)
The Pz Kpfw IV was designed as an infantry support vehicle and not intended to be produced in the same numbers as the Pz Kpfw III.

Panzer II and Panzer III tanks were reliable but were outgunned.
The outstanding performer was the Panzer IV as it had the perfect combination of speed, agility, firepower and reliability.
In my opinion the German Panzer V, the 'Panther', was the most satisfactory of all, and would have been dose to the ideal had it been possible to design with a lower silhouette.
