Pocket battleship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pocket battleship is an English language term for a class of warships built by German Reichsmarine in accordance with restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles.
They were classified as Panzerschiff ("armoured ship") in German; they were also known as the Deutschland class named after the first ship of this class to be completed.
The Kriegsmarine, which on the eve of World War II was years away from having a large surface fleet, was careful not to make the same mistake, and during the war they intended to use the Panzerschiff vessels purely as commerce raiders on the high seas.

 Pocket battleship
The pocket battleships (panzerschiff, or "armoured ship" in German, also known as Deutschland-class) were a class of light-weight battleships built by Germany in accordance with restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles.
In practice the fleet commanders forced them to operate along with the larger dreadnaughts[?], and they suffered stiffly.
The Germans were dedicated to not making the same mistake twice, and used the panzerschiff purely as commerce-raiders on the high seas.

Deutschland   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The proto-type of the Panzerschiff, or pocket battleship, was ordered under the 1929 program for the Reichsmarine of the Weimar Republic.
Germany was limited by the treaty of Versailles only to building replacements for her six pre-dreadnought coast defense battleships, and they were to displace only 10 000 tons and have guns no larger than 11 inch (28 cm) caliber.
Finally, her armament of two triple 11 inch turrets, although impressive, was ludicrously heavy for a mere commerce raider and not capable of rapid fire against a fast moving target.

The other one is the Panzerschiff "Deutschland" - the first one of three "pocket-battle-ships" (Deutschland, Admiral Scheer, Admiral Graf Spee) built according to Versailles treaty with a max.
To save weight they were the first major warships where welding was used and they are the largest warships with Diesel-engines ever built (other heavy cruisers and battleships had steam turbines).
The idea was outrun ships which could outgunn the Panzerschiff and to be able to outgunn any faster ship (exception: HMS Hood) combined with an endurance of 17.400 NM at 13 knots.

pl:Pancernik kieszonkowy The pocket battleships (Panzerschiff - "armoured ship" in German, also known as Deutschland class) were a class of warships built by Germany in accordance with restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles.
In fact they were not battleships, but big heavy cruisers, armed with guns larger, than other nations' cruisers.
The principal feature of the pocket battleship design was that they carried guns large enough (280 mm / 11" calibre) to outgun any enemy ship fast enough to catch them, while being fast enough to outrun an enemy powerful enough to cause damage.

 Kreuzer P History
The new Panzerschiff was called Kreuzer P, its specifications showed a bigger, faster and better protected version of the original design.
In many respects it was a modification of the design of the Panzerschiff D and Panzerschiff E, the planned successors of the Deutschland class which were later modified to Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.
Since those ships should be used for commerce war, they were designed to be superior to an CA with its artillery and faster than existing battleships.

German pocket battleship Deutschland   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The ship was originally classified as an armored ship (Panzerschiff) by Germany, and referred to as a pocket battleship by the British.
The class was termed Panzerschiff ("armoured ship"); they were designated "pocket battleships" by the British because of their characteristics: their guns (6 x 28 cm in two turrets) were substantially bigger than those of the heavy cruisers of her time, but they were much smaller (and much less armoured), but faster than the standard battleships.
Its keel was laid down in February 1929, at the Deutsche Werke shipyard in Kiel, and launched in May 1931.

Pansarskepp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pansarskepp is the Swedish term for a Coast Defense Battleship.
This class of vessel should not be confused with the similarly named German "Panzerschiff", popularly and incorrectly known as a "Pocket battleship", as the design and purpose was very different.
A Pansarskepp is most related to a Monitor.

 History of the Scharnhorst Class
These two vessels were the most potent ships available to the Germans when the war started, which in itself speaks volumes about how unprepared Germany was for the war.
Originally intended as additional Panzerschiff, the appearance of the French Dunkerque Class caused the redesign of these vessels into far more powerful units.
They were of an improved type over the ones used on the Panzerschiff, being longer and with a higher muzzle velocity.

 Graf Fitti
The three Deutschland-class panzerschiffs that Germany built to jumpstart a new, modern Navy in the 30's astounded the world with their powerful armament on such a small (supposedly 10,000 tons, but more like 12,500 tons) hull.
Because the recent London naval treaty allowed 25% of "cruisers" to carry attack planes, he commanded that the next panzerschiff be altered to accommodate wheeled aircraft.
Along with panzerschiff Admiral Scheer, Graf Fitti slipped out to sea prior to the planned start of war, bound for the Indian Ocean.

Light cruisers had 6" guns or less, while I think the definition of a heavy cruiser was the size of guns being greater than 6".
They also were supposedly built up to the 10,000 ton limit of the Versailles Treaty for all German warships, which happens to corrospond with the later Treaty limit on cruiser size for all nations.
Subject: Re: Graf Spee Class TO: "graham" Here's what I have on this: The designation of these ships was caught up in the conflicting legalities of Germany's treaty obligations after WW I. After the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was restricted to what the treaty called cuirasse (should be an accent over that last e).

Ibiza- The Bombing of the Panzerschiff 'Deutschland'-1937
In November the Deutschland was renamed the LÜTZOW....by orders from Hitler (aware of the propaganda value of a possible news headline like: "The Deutschland SUNK!")
At the time of the bombing vessels of the Republican fleet had been sighted by the German Panzerschiff, whose first reaction was that the attack had been carried out by the Republican destroyer flotilla.
Prieto, minister of war, tried to defuse the situation by saying that the SB-2s were reconnaissance aircraft and that they had been fired on first by the battleship's anti-aircraft guns. This version was hardly credible, given that reconnaissance aircraft didn't carry bombs.
