Following Fresu around Italy for a year and hearing him perform in a variety of contexts can do much to change a jaded American journalist’s parochial perceptions about what jazz “is” and who’s qualified to play it.
To his credit Fresu eschews engaging in divisive polemical discussions about what jazz “is” or “isn’t,” preferring to conserve his energy for the slew of commitments he’s constantly juggling.
While Fresu graduated with a degree in trumpet from the Cagliari Conservatory in Sardinia’s capital in 1984, and also attended the prestigious University of Musical and Performing Arts in Bologna, his formal musical education began when he was 11 and started playing trumpet in the traditional band of his hometown, Berchidda.

Paolo Fresu Quintet - discography - Ballads   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Obviously Paolo Fresu, Iike many young jazzfolk, owes a lot to Miles Davis, for his quintet conception (and knowing the value of a stable working unit) and for his eggshellfragile harmon-muted sound.
When I heard the Fresu quintet at Vancouver’s jazz festival in the summer of ‘91, I detected something in his playing I’d missed before, something which sets him apart trom the pack - the apparent influence of Chet baker, who despite his posthumous popularity has spawned few disciples among young trumpeters.
Still, with his quietly absorbing sound, Paolo Fresu is the star here, but we’ll make no grandiose claims for him.

Fresu has a similar touch, and the effect is as if another element has been added to the rhythm section as much as to the front line.
The British quartet supported Fresu sensitively, and guitarist John Parricelli enjoyed a particularly fruitful relationship with him - particularly on an otherwise unaccompanied Jobim duet in which the trumpeter's tender, softly squeezed sounds were cushioned by the guitarist's dreamy chords.
Fresu bounced fragmentary figures off drummer Ian Thomas's emphatic backbeat on an unexpectedly hard-struck version of Too Young to Go Steady, and he took both trumpet and flugelhorn solos in this and several other pieces, inclining to more shapely and less staccato figures on the bigger horn.

Kind of Porgy & Bess by Paolo Fresu is a contemporary response to Evans and Davis response to Gershwin.
Fresu says, "I've been obstinately following for several years the famous opera Porgy & Bess…" noting how he wanted to offer his own personal interpretation.
The result is a much more modern sound, one laced with a hint of world-music, global fusion, but still with its heart very much in melodic, accessible jazz.

Nevertheless, I am in no doubt that Paolo Fresu is, at least, less famous and established than the others on the list, contentious though it may be, and I think his presence here could be misleading to some readers.
And of course the listing for Paolo Fresu is still there in the C20th brass instrumentalists list, which is linked from Trumpet, but makes no claims regarding fame.
