Raccolte Frugone   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
This is one of the recurring subjects in Troubetzkoy's sculpture, which was defined by Vittorio Pica in the "Emporium" magazine in 1900 as the "sculpture of maternity".
The subjects represented here may be Amalia Riva Grandi, daughter of the Milanese industrialist Filippo Riva, and her child Rosa, who, around 1894 (the probable date of the work), would have been five years old, about the age of the child portrayed.
Troubetzkoy here takes up the theme of family ties that found great success in middle-class environments, both religious and secular, in the late nineteenth century.

troubetzkoy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)

Art Nouveau sculpture about bronze statuettes nouveau
Several of Rodin's compositions of nude figures in flowing, abandoned movement also conform to Art Nouveau principles of design and are preserved in bronze statuettes.
In the first quarter of the 20th century Rodin's follower Alfredo Pina (b 1883) and in Italy the excellent, dilettante sculptor Paolo Troubetzkoy adopted Rodin's free modelling technique for their 'finished' work.
Troubetzkoy exploited the effect of elegance conveyed by the elongation of human bodies and limbs far beyond what is natural, and these highly mannered figures may have inspired Alberto Giacometti later in the 20th century to create his idiosyncratic and amazingly etiolated bronze statuettes.

Paolo Troubetzkoy's equestrian monument to Alexander III (1900-06) brilliantly conveys the impression of brutal power that the tsar was said to emanate.
All the internal reforms which he initiated were intended to correct what he considered as the too liberal tendencies of the previous reign, so that he left behind him the reputation of a sovereign of the retrograde type.
