  VIBE.com: Papa Charlie Jackson
Papa Charlie Jackson was the first bluesman to record, beginning in 1924 with the Paramount label, playing a hybrid banjo-guitar (six strings tuned like a guitar but with a banjo body that gave it a lighter resonance) and ukulele.
Jackson switched to guitar on some of his late-'20s recordings, and occasionally played the ukulele as well, although he was back to using the five-string hybrid in 1934, when he cut his final sessions.
Papa Charlie Jackson remains a shadowy figure, considered a highly influential figure in the blues, though not quite a major blues figure, apart from the fact that he was the first male singer/guitarist who played the blues to get to record.

Papa Charlie Jackson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Papa Charlie Jackson (c.1890-1938) was an early American bluesman.
Originally performing in minstrel and medicine shows, Jackson was playing all around Chicago in the early 1920s.

Papa Charlie Jackson - Biography - AOL Music
Jackson made his first duet records in 1925, "Mister Man, Parts 1 and 2," with singer Ida Cox, again for Paramount, and later cut duets with Ma Rainey and future Oscar-winning actress Hattie McDaniel.
Jackson reached a musical peak of sorts in September of 1929 when he got to record with his longtime idol, Blind (Arthur) Blake, often known as the king of ragtime guitar during this period.
"Papa Charlie and Blind Blake Talk About It" parts one and two are among the most unusual sides of the late '20s, containing elements of blues jam session, hokum recording, and ragtime, with enough humor to make it the 1920s rival of tracks such as Bo Diddley's "Say Man" as well.

 Papa Charlie Jackson
Little to nothing is known about Jackson’s personal life, other than that he was born in New Orleans around 1890 where it is presumed that he began playing a six-string banjo tuned like a guitar, similar to the instrument used by Johnny St. Cyr.
Jackson also recorded with two of Tiny Parham’s bands “Tiny Parham and his “Forty” Fives and Tiny Parham and his Musicianswith whom he recorded between 1927 and 1930.
Jackson was the first really successful self accompanied performer and he has the distinction of being one of the creators of “Hokum”, a spicy form of popular song that made repeated and continual references to sex, his most popular composition being “Shake That Thing”.

Jackson, and others like him are often called "songsters" or "entertainers." Which is a polite way of saying that he isn't considered a "real" blues artist.
As the first solo, self-accompanied male blues singer to be a record star, Papa Charlie Jackson paved the way for the likes of Blind Blake and Blind Lemon Jefferson on his own label, and for their successors; but his music was from a different tradition.
Intriguingly, "Jackson's Blues" features a piano walking bass on guitar; equally intriguing is its lyric, praising the ability of a Chicago ward heeler, coincidentally named Palmer Jackson, to get people out of jail and look after their rights.

Ari Eisinger's Acoustic Blues Message Board: Re: Papa Charlie Jackson's Airy Man for John Miller
I agree that it's a shame about the poor sound quality of Papa Charlie's recordings, although I think it lends them an air of quaint appeal, along with his six string banjo.
Could you tell me what the chord : progression for Papa Charlie Jackson's Airy : Man is? It sounds like D to me, but I'm : having trouble with some of the other : chords.
Papa Charlied continues to : play a D bass under these chords, hence the : compound designations--E/D and Eminor/D. It : is a crying shame that Papa Charlie's : recordings are available only in re-issues : with really poor sound, but I think he did : primarily acoustic recordings, like Lemon.

A complete output of Jackson's work, of which volume three, containing his duets with Blind Blake, is probably of greatest interest if a starting point is needed.
Papa Charlie Jackson's last 25 recordings, dating from September of 1928 through November of 1934, and doing more proper blues here than on either previous volume.
By the time of the release of the material here, Jackson was one of the most seasoned of studio bluesmen, with nearly half a decade recording experience behind him -- his vocal presence on all of these records is extraordinary, and he knows how to get the most out of his instrument, guitar or banjo.

Throughout the 70's Reverend Charlie Jackson cut a string of astonishingly tough 45's that have long been held in high esteem by gospel collectors.
Jackson's music stems from an earlier era when the line between blues and gospel was just a hair apart, and indeed these sides sound like they could have been cut decades before.
Jackson's music is deeply rooted in the Mississippi blues tradition and indeed the first songs he recalls playing were blues numbers.
