Papa Stour is one of the Shetland Islands in Scotland, with a population of around thirty people, some of whom have immigrated since an appeal for residents in the 1970s.
Papa Stour is the subject a 1299 manuscript written in Old Norse, which is the oldest surviving document from Shetland.
As of 2005, the population has fallen to 20 after serious discord between islanders led to several court cases and subsequently, a number of people left the island and the school closed [1].

From hippy idyll to nimby feud: how Papa Stour fell from grace - [Sunday Herald]
Papa, which translates as Òbig island of the priestsÓ, is in the throes of a feud between rival Christians that threatens to consume the rural idyll both groups sought when they moved with their families across the water.
It was then that Papa Stour first became a magnet for incomers Ð if you disregard the ancient settlers, the early Christian missionaries and the Vikings, that is Ð after an advert was placed in the press calling for people to come and revitalise the dying community.
Papa Stour has been written off for a long time and for the first time in a long time things are looking very good.

The Papar Project : Shetland - Papa Stour, Sandness
Papa Stour controls the southern entry to St. Magnus Bay, earlier St. Magnus Fjord, and has been tentatively identified by Crawford as the St. Magnus Island recorded in German and Dutch sources of the 17th century (Crawford 1999a, 13).
Papa Stour is undulating with two hills rising to 60m and 87m on the south and west side and only the eastern third of the island is cultivated: ‘When the season is mild it produces very rich crops of bear, oats and potatoes....
There is a marked division on Papa Stour between the cultivated eastern half of the island and the far less fertile, western half (Crawford and Ballin Smith 1999, 5ff), which had probably developed long before it was described by the Revd.
