 Monastery Chronicles: Papa Stronsay
The well on Papa Stronsay runs dry, due to water usage for cementing etc. Thanks to the quick help of Mr John Watson, an emergency solution is achieved: a pipe is laid across Papa Sound which allows water from our property on Stronsay to feed into the well on Papa Stronsay, approximately 800 metres away.
Mr John Fiddler of Stronsay was given the honour of lighting the bonfire with the blessed flame.
News travelled quickly and soon Dr McKay from Stronsay is coming to Papa Stronsay pier in the Stella Maris; he is met and transported by tractor to the scene of the accident.

Stronsay (ON Strjonsey - Profit Island) is one of the most fertile islands in Orkney, and has a much indented coastline, with many very fine beaches, as well as low cliffs on the south east side, with several large caves, and a natural arch at the Vat of Kirbuster.
Stronsay was used as a harbour for Dutch and Fife boats during the season for several centuries up until 1937, when the fishery collapsed due to overexploitation.
Kelp-making was introduced to Stronsay about 1719, to make potash and soda, which were used in glass and soap manufacture and were in short supply due to the American and French Wars.

There is no moor and correspondingly no peat in the whole of Stronsay, except in one part, where it looks to Shapinsay (from which, to the south, it is ten miles distant, with a most savage strait between).
Near the coast of Stronsay, close to the harbour, to the west lies an island, called Papa Stronsay, more than a mile long but narrow, all fertile but not abundant in peaty land.
And to the north it is so low (for it rises higher to the south) that to sailors ignorant of the island and still at a long distance from it at sea, it is not visible at all; and hence shipwreck often occurs to those who sail there at night.

 Stronsay Guide and Holiday Cottages
It was said that, on a Sunday, you could walk across the decks of the boats all the way to Papa Stronsay, the tiny island that shelters Whitehall from the north, on which a new monastery is currently being built.
Stronsay is served by a regular car ferry service from Kirkwall to Whitehall (2 daily; takes 1hr 40min-2hr), and weekday flights, also from Kirkwall (Mon-Fri 2 daily; takes 25min).
A cheaper alternative is the Stronsay Bird Reserve (tel 01857/616363; £40-50), a nicely positioned BandB in a lovely old crofthouse, which also tolerates camping on the shores of Mill Bay.

While I was there Father Richard Mary CSSR from Papa Stronsay in Scotland arrived for a visit and at that time Father Cummins and Brother Alban decided that they would like to end their days in the Redemptorist Monastery in Scotland.
Father Cummins is, of course, the founder of so many of our congregations all over Australia and we owe him a huge debt of gratitude for his great faith and courage in the lean years of the 1970’s and 80’s.
In spite of his physical illness he has lost nothing of his intrepid nature and has undertaken the gruelling journey to the north of Scotland at the end of October and is now settled with Brother Alban at Papa Stronsay.
