Papa Was a Rollin' Stone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Temptations' version of "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" set a precedent for extra-length "cinematic soul" song mixes, and future songs like Donna Summer 's fourteen-minute "Love to Love You Baby" and the instrumentals of MFSB expanded upon the concept in the mid-1970s.
Later in 1972, Whitfield, who also produced the song, took "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and remade it as a twelve-minute record for The Temptations, which won three Grammy Awards in 1973.
This version of "Papa" was released as a single in early 1972, and peaked at #63 on the pop charts and #24 on the RandB charts.

Superstition is defined as a irrational belief in the ominous significance of a particular thing or circumstance.

Nineteen seventy-two saw the release of Norman Whitfield's magnum opus, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone".
The Temptations released two singles on Miracle, "Oh Mother of Mine" and "Check Yourself", before it was closed and merged with the Gordy label (to avoid confusion with The Miracles singing group).
The most famous of these, the "Temptation Walk", or "Temptation Strut", was adapted from similar moves by a 1950s act called The Flamingos and a 1960s act called The Vibrations.

 Temptations...Forever! - The Book
The Temptations were the epitome of Motown style, setting unmatched standards for meticulous five-part harmonies, razor-sharp choreography and musical innovation with hits such as "My Girl", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", and "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone".
The story of the Temptations was largely hidden from view as it occurred and because of this, their fans could simply focus on the music.
This updated edition of the book - on which the Emmy-winning NBC miniseries "Temptations" was based - features a new chapter covering the band's last fourteen years.

Dennis’ gritty leads fueled such hit songs as "I Can’t Get Next To You", Cloud Nine", "Ball of Confusion", "Psychedelic Shack", "Runaway Child, Runnin’ Wild", as well as the three Grammy Award winning "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone".
Temptations members Otis Williams and Eddie Kendricks had seen Dennis perform at the Howard Theater in Washington, D.C. while Dennis was still with the Contours and thought his soulful gritty voice and strong presence would make him a perfect replacement if David did not straighten up.
Dennis moved with his family to Detroit when he was 7 years old.

The best of these were "You Make Your Own Heaven and Hell Right Here on Earth" (which perhaps recalled "Smiling Faces" a little too closely) and the original version of "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," which Whitfield would quickly redo with the Temptations for a much more definitive (and massively successful) version.
As vocalists they weren't in the same league as the Temps, and Whitfield was most likely reserving his real killer songs for the more famous group.
He was doing the same thing with the Temptations, and the Undisputed Truth's records couldn't help but suffer in comparison.
