 Indonesian IBAs lack protection
All four are globally threatened including the endangered Flores Monarch Monarcha sacerdotum and the endangered Flores Scops-owl Otus alfredi which has only been recorded a few times in one small area over the last 150 years.
Unprotected IBAs on Flores are also home to populations of the globally threatened Flores Giant-rat Papagomys armandvellei and Komodo Dragon Varanus komodoensi.
BirdLife, which has been working to protect biodiversity in Indonesia since 1992, proposes the development of ‘alternative’ conservation models for areas management owing to the generally populated nature of the IBAs, and additional pressure from the heavily-populated nature of the provinces in general.

The formidable Komodo dragon, a giant lizard, is now confined to the island of Komodo, but it once shared Flores with the little people and probably ate them, as did an even larger related species of lizard, now extinct.
The still surviving Flores giant rat, Papagomys armandvillei, is nearly 3ft long.
It is easy to imagine the little people hunting this creature, which must have seemed to them as large as a pig does to us.

The results are viewed as a hypothesis of the phylogenetic relationship of these taxa that can be tested by other data sets.
Three main groupings are suggested: (1) Maxomys; (2) Leopoldomys, Niviventer and Tokudaia; and (3) Bandicota, Berylmys, Bullimus, Bunomys, Komodomys, Nesokia, Papagomys, Paruromys, Rattus, Stenomys, Sundamys and Taeromys.
Within this latter group, Bunomys chrsogasta, Komodomys and Rattus timorensis group together, as do Bullimus, Rattus and Stenomys, and Bandicota with Nesokia.
