The Papal Inauguration Mass is a liturgical service of the Roman Catholic Church (officiated with elements of both the Latin Rite and Eastern Rite) for the ecclesiastical investiture of the Pope.
In his Inauguration homily however he spoke of October 1978, so soon after the sudden death, as being "not the time" to return to the coronation, while dismissing the principal justification given for abandoning both the coronation and the Papal Tiara, the suggestion that their use suggested a claim by popes to temporal jurisdiction.

Instead the new pope was installed in a new low key 'inauguration' ceremony, so low key indeed that he had it moved to the morning so as not to disrupt Italian soccer coverage, which would normally be shown in the afternoon.

The prohibition against discussing papal succession while the pope is still alive dates back to Felix IV (526-30), who instructed the clergy and the Roman Senate to elect his archdeacon, Boniface, as his successor.
The papal electors were limited to the clergy of the Diocese of Rome by the Roman synod of 499 (although in some elections some of the laity still participated until the 8th century).
The inauguration mass took place on Sunday, April 24, 2006, five days after the election (in the past this would have involved crowning the pope with the papal tiara, but since John Paul I involves the receiving of the pallium).

The Papal Coronation is a ceremony in which a new pope is crowned as head of the Roman Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City (and before 1870, head of state of the Papal States).
The absence of this supposed oath, and his failure to be crowned with, and wear, a papal tiara, means that Benedict XVI is not considered a legitimate Pope, but merely an antipope, in the eyes of some ultra-traditionalist Catholics.
