Papal Coronation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pope Pius XII, wearing the 1877 Papal Tiara, is carried through St. Peter's Basilica on a sedia gestatoria in St. Peter's Basilica in the 1950s.
The Papal Coronation is a ceremony in which a new pope is crowned as head of the Roman Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City (and before 1870, head of state of the Papal States).
Thus "Benedict XVI", refusing the papal oath and tiara, is not considered a legitimate Pope in the eyes of some ultra-traditionalist Catholics.

Papal Oath - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Papal Oath is an oath by which, according to some Traditionalist Catholics, the popes of the Catholic Church swore, during their Papal Coronation, never to innovate or change anything that has been handed down to them.
The tradition of taking the oath began, they say, with Pope Saint Agatho on June 27, 678 (the date of his election as Pope).
One must be careful in not confusing the coronation oath with the Anti-Modernist Oath that Pope St. Pius X mandated for those taking up certain offices in the Church.

 Papal Tiara
As with all previous popes, Pope Paul VI was crowned with a tiara at the papal coronation.
Pope Paul's tiara was presented to the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC by the Apostolic Delegate to the United States on February 6, 1968 as a gesture of Pope Paul VI's affection for the Catholic Church in the United States.
One of the papal tiaras remains in use, however, as is placed on the head of a statue of St.

The oath makes it clear that a magisterium that contradicts former magisterium is not magisterium, for the pope is sworn to put himself outside the Church if even he contradicts what he has received from his predecessors.
The ancient papal oath, therefore, foresees the possibility that even a pope may become a heretic or schismatic by violating either dogma or the rites of the Church handed down by Tradition.
Papal infaillibility was here being invoked not to EXALT the Pope's authority, but to limit it, by ensuring that a pope did not arbitrarily reverse earlier Christian teaching.

Papal Inauguration -   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Papal Inauguration Mass is a liturgical service of the Catholic Church (officiated with elements of both the Latin Rite and Eastern Rite) for the ecclesiastical investiture of the Pope.
The modern Papal Inauguration, based through not exactly modelled on the form used for John Paul I, takes place during Mass (usually in the piazza outside Saint Peter's Basilica) and involves the formal bestowal of the pallium, the symbol of the pope's universal jurisdiction, on the newly elected pope by the senior Cardinal Deacon.
The modern ceremony does not include a Papal Oath, allegedly always sworn by popes before John Paul I. Conservatives criticised its absence, with some sedevacantist groups refusing to accept the legitimacy of the modern popes due to the absence of both the oath and the symbolic tiara.

Catholic Culture : Document Library : Guilty Only of Failure To Teach
In order for the case of Honorius to disprove the doctrine of papal infallibility as defined by the First Vatican Council, it is not sufficient to claim the pope was a monothelite.
With regard to the papal oath, it stated only that Honorius was condemned because he had "added fuel to their [the monothelites'] wicked assertions" (Liber diurnus, ibid., 455)—a charge which does not substantially differ from earlier statements that Honorius had fostered heresy by his negligence.
Papal infallibility does not mean the bishops of Rome will be holy, wise, or as vigilant as they ought to be in the discharge of their office.

Later still the papal collectors were ordered to appear in Basle to render an account of their work and all outstanding debts due to the pope were to be paid at Basle.

They often confuse the alleged oath with the oath against modernism that Pope Pius X mandated for those taking up certain offices in the Church.
Pope John Paul I, Pope John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI, who had no coronation ceremonies, did not take the oath, and Traditionalists interpret this fact negatively, some to the point of sedevacantism.

 Catholic Light: Catholic Postage?
Posted by: Rosemarie at September 19, 2005 04:56 PM Well you have to admit that Vatican II was not beneficial to the church or the laity and pushed the church closer to Protestanism than to catholicism.
The reason no pope since Vatican II has taken a coronation oath is that a coronation is no longer part of the installation ceremonies for a new pope, a much needed return to the teaching of the early Church, where a pope was first and foremost a shepherd, not a king.
I'd have no problem with the oath (or a coronation ceremony) to emphaisze the seriousness of the obligations being undertaken, but I also doubt that an oath or ceremony is really going to add too much to someone who becomes pope.
