If Paper Mario 2 could speak, it might tell you that turn-based RPG combat is almost uniformly boring and rubbish.
Paper Mario refined and built the idea up on the N64, and raised the humour quotient several-fold, before Mario and Luigi: SuperStar Saga on the Game Boy Advance topped the lot.
It's obviously too early to tell whether Paper Mario 2 will be able to sustain itself over a decent length adventure, but Mario and Luigi certainly did, and this latest adventure has all the hallmarks of that game and more.

Known as Mario Story 2 in Japan (where the original N64 Paper Mario was simply Mario Story), the title is underway at Nintendo's first party chums Intelligent Systems, whose experience with the turn-based Advance Wars and Fire Emblem RPG titles will doubtless prove invaluable.
It also promises to employ turn-based battles with action elements along much the same lines as AlphaDream's GBA title Mario and Luigi, which was itself an extension of the old, 16-bit Super Mario RPG ethos and drew dollops of inspiration from the N64 Paper Mario title.
Other shots show Mario dodging (or perhaps chatting with) a big Whomp, striding through waist-high tracts of snow and visiting various castles, and there's also a shot of Bowser working his way through a mock-up of Super Mario Bros. world 1-1, which ought to be interesting.

Paper Mario was certainly one of the quirkiest Mario games to come out in a while, certainly the most unexpected Nintendo release on the N64.
Paper Mario essentially made a joke of the RPG genre, taking the overly serious nature of most RPG titles and putting in a rather cute Mario spin on it.
Paper Mario 2 won’t change that much, other than a number of typical sequel changes this is a familiar game and yes, the combat system is very much in tact.

I played the first Paper Mario and I loved it(useless note: I beat the game on the day Dale Earnhart(sp?) died) and this one is even better.
My only gripe with the game is, back when I first started reading about Paper Mario, every source was calling it "the sequel to Super Mario RPG!" Since SMRPG is my favorite game of all time, I nearly shit my pants in anticipation.
PM2 may not have voiceovers for the dialogue, but the script is written so well that voiceovers wouldn't do the game justice.

I may be mis-remembering how long it took me to finish the original Paper Mario for the N64; it may have been more like 40 or 50 hours; still, compared to some of the more elaborate platformers, it was a relatively short game.
Paper Mario 2 utilizes a standard RPG model for gameplay; the party journeys through an overworld, dropping into combat when an enemy is encountered.
Mario and one of his sidekicks appear onscreen at all times, and only one sidekick may accompany him in battle (though they may be swapped out at will).
