Dave Gahan - Paper Monsters : album review
Dave Gahan is looking pretty good for having fronted Depeche Mode for 22 years, and having been involved in all the standard excesses associated with rock stardom including battles with drug addiction in the 90s.
These tracks are slow, sensual, slightly mournful but ultimately optimistic - far from the monsters of the title, a reference to both the horrors of the past and the everyday difficulties of life.
Paper Monsters is both fresh and supremely professional, borrowing snippets and feelings from many other eras, genres and artists but creating something that sounds completely new.

Slant Magazine - Music Review: Dave Gahan: Paper Monsters
He battled addictions to alcohol and heroin at various points during the two decades he's fronted the synth-pop-goth group Depeche Mode (he nearly died of a drug overdose in 1996 but was revived after two full minutes).
Gahan is born again as a full-fledged songwriter on his competent solo debut, the alternately entrancing and propulsive Paper Monsters.
Though Paper Monsters has an unavoidable Depeche Mode tint, it offers a fresh, naked and often compelling glimpse into the artist's inner world, from the seediest depths of tortured depravity to enlightening heights of personal salvation.

Paper Monsters contains only two jems, the lead single and ever catchy Dirty Sticky Floors and the equally good Bottle Living.
Now, whether both of them can stop with this slow song production, turn it up a notch and come back with a bang on the announced new DM album remains to be seen.
Aptly named Paper Monsters, the album seems imposing at first only to reveal that this monster could be compared more with any friendly fuzzy creature found in a Disney movie than a menacing beast.

Dave Gahan - Paper Monsters (Album Review)
Paper Monsters marks Gahan’s debut as a solo artist and as a songwriter, and it’s full of the type of reflective confessionals one might expect to hear.
Musically, the album draws from Depeche Mode’s sound, though it also tosses around splashes of U2’s psychedelic RandB as well as the sort of dreamy, ambient textures that blur the line between Pink Floyd and The Cure.
Good as this may seem, Paper Monsters doesn’t hold together quite as well as it should for Gahan.

Much of the problems on "Paper Monsters" could perhaps be attributed to his collaborator Knox Chandler.
It's hard for us to say as in terms of songwriting there's no precedent of Gahan's to compare it to, but it seems as if Chandler is living in the shadows afraid of trying something new and in the process attempting rehashes of his friends better works.
It's hard to see what the point of "Paper Monsters" is apart from a vanity project or ego fulfilment for Gahan himself.

Dave Gahan (Paper Monsters) mxdwn.com review by taylor whipple
Thus comes a daunting task of putting out Paper Monsters, the first solo album from the former front man. The most challenging aspect of producing a solo album is molding a distinctive sound for yourself while stepping out of the shadows from your previous work to create something unique.
Paper Monsters manages to marginally exceed expectations, while still drawing back on past qualities that made Depeche Mode such a success.
And while it's almost classic Depeche Mode style, Paper Monsters is filled with a pop sensibility only found in a few Depeche Mode songs.

 DAVE GAHAN - Paper Monsters
First, because he’s been reportedly moaning about his lack of studio involvement with Depeche Mode, which is supposedly hogged by Martin Gore, and second, because Gore has only just released his own solo album, Counterfeit 2.
However, Gahan has decided to go for the rockier, earthy vocal approach and this certainly lends Paper Monsters a certain live feel.
That’s not to say that the album does not have its tender moments, of which 'Hold On', whose verse is startlingly similar to The Cure’s mid-eighties track 'Catch', is one example.

He’s long since sated his need to live the cliched rock 'n roll lifestyle, and has realised that he can both love and be loved, and all of it shows on ‘Paper Monsters’.
Gahan has not only managed to survive his often perilous life’s journey, but has also salvaged a sense of humour and seems to be keeping his ego well in check.
‘Paper Monsters’ reveals all this and more, but that aside, it’s an album that stands alone — and well apart from the Depeche Mode legacy — as a worthy offering in its own right.

Paper Monsters opens with the first single "Dirty Sticky Floors" which doesn't do much to get out of the shadow except for the seedy title.
More recently it seems like every Depeche Mode album has one grittier song (that is often chosen as the first single) and seems like an amalgam of "Barrel Of A Gun" and "I Feel You" but can't fault him for playing to his strengths.
There were some moments where lyrically he didn't get his chin over the bar but for a debut album this shows Gahan has some promise as a solo artist.

The solo debut of Depeche Mode frontman David Gahan has been a long time coming, so you'd expect the album to be brimming with messy ideas formulated while Gahan was forced to sing Vince Clarke and Martin Gore songs while his own were filed away.
Yet Paper Monsters is not the wild work of someone newly liberated.
While not a complete departure from Depeche Mode (some songs on the album, especially Hold On, could well have been heard on Exciter), Paper Monsters truly feels like Dave was ready to do his own thing and share his own views on life.

It's not until the sixth track, more than halfway through the record, that you get the sound you were expecting ‹ just the right synthesizers and strings twisting and knotting around the broken croon that Dave Gahan, as the voice of Depeche Mode, wove haunted tracks from Blasphemous Rumors to Never Let Me Down Again.
It's the first time that Gahan's solo debut Paper Monsters sounds like Depeche Mode, which is both a testament to Gahan's surprising versatility as an artist and a reminder that Martin Gore's songwriting was as integral to Depeche Mode's sound as Gahan's voice.
From the first churning notes of Paper Monsters, it's clear that Gahan is not only out to make his own voice heard, but that the man behind the voice has been through the wringer once or twice.

Paper Monsters sees ten Gahan songs brought to life by the highly charismatic but historically very toubled Mode frontman.
And while Gahan looks lonely and isolated in the promo shots, he sounds warm and surrounded by friends when making this impressive, addictive album.
"Dirty Sticky Floors", the first single, is perhaps a little too crass to be credible, but elsewhere Paper Monsters mirrors Mode’s finer qualities such as the ballads of "A Little Piece" and "Black And Blue Again" to the electric-rock of "Bottle Living".

Dave Gahan: Paper Monsters - review of Dave Gahan's new album featuring Dirty Sticky Floors
Dave Gahan's first solo effort wasn't awaited with much anticipation, as Martin Gore the maestro and one-man band of Depeche Mode, has never succeeded in getting over the hurdle with his Counterfeits, except for the single "In a Manner of Speaking".
Without being revolutionary, however, Dave Gahan surprises with Paper Monsters, a naïve, tormented and much more convincing work than the group's last album Exciter.
Under the supervision of Ken Thomas, who produced Sigur Rós, and shouldered by Knox Chandler, the ex-guitarist from Psychedelic Furs and Siouxsie & the Banshees, Gahan has created a record with multiple facets, oscillating between the fat sound of Depeche Mode, during the Songs Of Faith & Devotion period, and intimate, electro-psychedelic sophisticated ballads.
