Paper could be purchased by the quire (20 cents) or half quire--a quire consisting of a collection of 24 or 25 sheets of paper.

The cotton and wool were then woven with hand looms into a light cloth known as "jeans", or "janes." Daniel Brush wrote of his experience working in a store in southern Illinois during the 1820's, and reported selling both "jeans" and "janes" in his store.

 Northumberland Manuscript
Spedding, he says, "tells us it was a quire of 22 sheets, [Spedding however, only says it was folded double "as in an ordinary quire of paper "] but he omits to take into account the outer sheet, which was of the same fold of paper and served as a cover; this made 23 sheets.
It is almost certain, for example, that it contained, with the other speeches written by Bacon for Essex's Device in 1595, The Squire's speech in the tilt-yard, as well as the beginning and the end of Leycester's Common Wealth.
Spedding so read it when the manuscript was very much clearer than it is now, we may, I think, be content to accept his evidence, more especially as close to it, a little to the left, stands the word "Phillipp" still plain for all to read.

Jan Zwicky; $18.95 paper 1-55447-001-3, 80 pp., 5 x 8, Gaspereau Press, Apr.
Zwicky’s best poems succeed on the strength of musical phrases, specific imagery, and dramatic tension, as in “Unsong: August,” with its counterpoint of “artillery/slam[ming] its dense fists into earth” and “holler[ing]” traffic on the one hand and the individual woman “bend[ing] among geraniums” on the other.
Though most of the poems are competently executed, Zwicky’s direct addresses to objects such as a bath (“Bath, don’t be jealous!/The shower’s just a show-off”) and a “Round Stone” (“Teach me, stone,/to be my own weight/and anonymous”) have a precious feel to them.

It seems that these two methods of forming papyrus codices represent early experiments, which were eventually abandoned in favour of quires of eight, ten, or twelve leaves, such as we find-in late papyrus codices, and universally in vellum and paper books.
This is a conjoint pair of leaves ( i.e., two leaves from a single quire, still joined together as when the sheet of which they are composed was originally folded), found by Grenfell and Hunt at Oxyrhynchus in 1896-7, and published as Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 208.
The interest of the papyrus lies in the fact that it cannot be assigned wholly to any of the families of text described in the previous chapter.

Crozier does occasionally limn something in taut strong language – as in the title poem, wherein the eponymous whetstone is “Flat, black, and shot with mica” – but such moments are rare glints in an otherwise grey pile of gravel.
For the most part, Crozier hoes the same old row of free-verse anecdote and lyric that has been the dominant mode since the middle of the last century.
